    Julie is the very best!

If you are searching for a wedding photographer, look no further. Julie is the best there is. She kept us sane, rolling with the punches and taking charge, while allowing us to focus on our day. Photography was a huge priority for us, but it never got in the way of our experience or being present in the moment. In addition to her incredible artistic talent, Julie was a sounding board throughout our entire wedding planning process. She introduced us to many of our vendors, was always quick to respond and answer any questions (with both photography and the planning process overall) and helped us bring our vision to life. One of our favorite part of working with Julie is that she knew photography was a huge priority for us on our wedding day, but she never allowed it to get in the way of our experience or being present in the moment. We are thrilled with what she captured and couldn't recommend her enough.

Julie photographed our small wedding ceremony in Healdsburg and we are so thrilled with our decision. She captured the intimate moments of the day perfectly. The images are truly gorgeous and speak to her attention to detail and passion about her art. I love that she came to wedding photography following a successful journalism career (she studied at Columbia!), and this gives her a unique style that I love.
Julie was a joy to work with. From the first phone call, when we discussed expectations, goals and planning, to the follow-up phone calls and emails, Julie was professional, communicative and responsive. Her calm, professional and light-hearted demeanor on the wedding day was calming for me, and I think brought out the best in all of our photographs.
This was a serious investment for us (the rest of the wedding, cake, flowers, etc. was all done by friends and family) and worth every single penny. We will treasure the photographs forever.

As one of my bridesmaids said, Julie's photos at my wedding were "just stunning!" The photos captured the mood of the day perfectly and bring me back -- gentle, streams of sunlight, hopeful and anticipatory.

Two years later, Julie's photos of my pregnancy accompanied by an audio interview of my husband's and my early parenting thoughts are some of my most precious gifts ever in life. We will treasure them as a family for decades, even centuries, to come.

Julie helps people tell the stories of our lives. She helps us shape what we are becoming. What an incredible gift.

Julie has been our family photographer since I was pregnant with our first daughter, I am writing on the wedding site since my one regret from our amazing wedding was that we didn't use Julie as our photographer. Our photographer was fine and we have good photos, but Julie has such a unique touch. We now almost 4 years of photos- our girls are 3 and 9 months and it would be so nice to have it consistant from our engagement/wedding through now. I love how Julie documents our life and we love her work.

Julie has a gift. Her ability to show your life in its most stunning moments through images and your own words is amazing. When you work with her, you don’t even know that she is taking photos or recording your stories. She is so talented after years as a photographer and writer that she holds her camera at a low angle, her voice recorder is sitting gently between you on the coffee table and she is asking you about how you fell in love with the curiosity of a journalist (she was one for years), what it was like to give birth, find out you are pregnant. And it is not just the good questions, it is her deep listening. She is so interested in everyone she works with. I felt like my story was the most intriguing thing she had ever heard. I just went on and on and then finally remembered she was taping and photographing. It was so great because I didn’t feel self conscious about what I was saying or doing. And then the results are beyond what I could have imagined. Basically she created my best self on screen! I looked beautiful even at 9 months pregnant! I felt like a whale but looked totally graceful and glowing in her photos. And in the voice recordings that flowed with the story of my pregnancy I sounded so articulate. It sounded like I just sat down with her and told the most perfect story. But really she waded through an hour of me recorded talking and edited it to 5 minutes of what sounded like a perfect succinct, powerful, moving story. I felt like a genius but actually she is the genius!

Here are a few things I said after seeing Julie Kay’s work:

After Julie sent me the short documentary she did with photos and me and my husband talking about the birth of our baby.
“I don’t think I have the words yet to thank you or even tell you what I most love about the film. I watched it three more times and I hesitate yet to pick apart what I love. I cry through the whole thing each time when I watch it alone and I just want to let it wash over me in full with the full emotion of it all. Being able to remember the joy and intensity of Caleb’s birth with these early words and photos from me and his dad, it is the greatest gift I can ever be given.”

Comments I sent to Julie when I got to see a documentary she created for a young family.
“The sounds of the family in the beginning of this family documentary is like the song of everydayness that I imagine they will forget once the kids grow up, they are so lucky to have that forever.”

“This is pure magic. You have captured the pureness of young girls, the light of this family and the glee of a family young and growing. They will look back at this forever and remember how this moment in time felt.”
