Heurich House Museum was a perfect choice for my daughter's October 25th wedding - we used the Conservatory space which is small, but very beautiful. An unexpected but stunning occurrence was that for the 4 PM ceremony, the setting sun shone through the red stained glass windows and cast a temporary red glow on the back of the couple as they stood in front of the minister. It was so beautiful! We worked with Hillary first, then Emma who were the Event Coordinators, and they were very helpful working within the confines of the House preservation guidelines. It was also a reasonably less expensive option in the D.C.

Gem of a Wedding Venue in the Middle of the City

The staff was very helpful and accommodating for our wedding. There was excellent coordination between the Heurich House Museum staff and our vendors. A few details were lost in communication when our day of coordinator had an emergency and someone else had to step in the day before, but the person that replaced her was responsive and managed to pull it off. We loved the history of the house, the beautiful rooms, and the ability to have and indoor/outdoor wedding in an urban location. Highly recommend getting married here!

    A pain to deal with

We went ahead with Heurich House as our venue and it worked out fine but my goodness Amy did not make it easy. Less than a month out we nearly canceled because we were so fed up with her consistent miscommunication and inflexibility. Here are the highlights of the negatives:

    - The wedding brochure stated "Price reductions are offered for receptions without alcohol or dancing and for under 30 guests" and we were expecting to pay less because we had 16 people total (Amy later clarified that even though the information was at the bottom of a page detailing fees for both ceremonies and receptions the price reduction was only for receptions).
    - When the contract arrived there was a random clause that prohibited children between the ages of 18 months and 10 years which we had to work out since my nephew and niece were attending.
    - The biggest issue with planning though was confusion about how much time the space was available to us. We initially paid $500 to rent the space plus deposit and were told that bought us access to the space from between 3 and 4 PM, 30 minutes of ceremony time plus 30 minutes to get ready. We planned to use the time for our ceremony plus photos. We asked if we could have a few extra minutes in the garden if needed and wound up having to pay an extra $500 because Amy refused to "waive fees for any additional time," stating that if our wedding had been M-F between 10 and 5 when the garden was open to the public it would've been fine but because it was a Saturday people would need to be paid to stay late and lock up after.
    - On the day of, we arrived to the venue to find a sign on the door saying entry would start at 3:15 and our guests had been left outside in the cold (this was February).

To be clear, it's a beautiful and unique venue, and at a price point that is hugely hard to find in DC. It just deserves a much better event manager. And with all the hassle in planning I can't recommend it.

    Heurich House Museum's reply:

    Hi Allison,

We appreciate your honest feedback and are so sorry to hear you are disappointed with your wedding at the Heurich House Museum. We wish you had expressed your concerns to us directly before now and we would have tried to address them in a way that made you feel better.

From reviewing Amy's many communications with you leading up to your event, I see that some of these issues actually had been addressed, for example, our contract does not prohibit kids, just asks that you tell us they'll be onsite and requires that we agree, which we did (we have this in place mostly for safety reasons).

Unfortunately, other issues, like cost for additional time, are something we cannot be as flexible about because we are a small nonprofit museum with a very small staff. We have written this directly into the contract so as to be as transparent as possible.

If you would like to talk more about your concerns, I would encourage you to reach out to me directly (kim@heurichhouse.org).

We hope you still have good memories of your wedding and that you will come back and visit us soon. The garden is already open!

    All the best,

    Kim
