Absolutely delicious
We worked with Albemarle baking company twice: for our micro-wedding and for the larger celebration event a year later. This bakery provided beautiful and delicious cakes; we have received many compliments on them since the events, some going so far as to say that “it was the best wedding cake we’ve had.” We loved that the bakery provided non-traditional options for the exterior of the cake---we chose marzipan layered over buttercream, a delicious alternative to normal thick buttercream or fondant. The cake arrived on time to our venue, and made its way to the florals / staging area and kitchen without incident or us having to worry about coordination. We highly recommend Albemarle Baking Company for your event, and particularly recommend that you try the chocolate and praline cake. -

I have loved Albemarle Baking Company for as long as I can remember. The Rossberg children grew up going there and we're quick to introduce out of town visitors - anyone, really - to ABC. About a week ago, I had Princess Cake at my wedding at Alumni Hall and it was AMAZING (as usual). Gerry was delightful to work with: prompt, professional, kind etc. etc. THANK YOU, Albemarle Baking Company! I wouldn't have wanted anyone else to make my wedding cake! (flowers on the cake provided by our florist, Willow Branch Flowers) -

Elena Sent on 01/18/2016Riki at Albemarle Baking Company did a fantastic job on our wedding cake! The cake was delicious, beautiful, and exactly what we wanted (it was also extremely affordable compared to other bakeries in the area we also considered before picking Albemarle Baking Co.)! Riki worked with me to design a multi-tiered cake with different icing patterns on each level – the buttercream roses on the sides of some of the tiers really took my breath away – Riki is so talented! We had a lemon pound cake with vanilla buttercream icing and Bavarian cream filling – absolutely delicious. It seemed to be a hit with all of our guests and my only wedding regret was that I didn’t eat an extra slice of our wedding cake before the wedding was over! The good news is that Riki makes you a small recreation of your wedding cake for your one year anniversary (so you don’t have to freeze your top tier), so at least I’ll get to eat more of it in a year! -

Shaun Sent on 05/11/2015Albermarle Baking Company provided our wedding cake. We got married on May 1st 2015 at Pippin Hill Winery. The initially tasting was delish, they offer a Princess cake that we didn't change a thing about. It is a traditional Swedish dessert features vanilla sponge cake layered with bavarian cream and covered with a thin sheet of marzipan. They even offer to give you a top tier every anniversary, and we were planning on flying back to Charlottesville, VA anyway next year but definitely stopping by the bakery. I sampled a few other cakes while I was there and they were all good. The Princess cake was just perfect for a wedding cake. Definitely would recommend this bakery.

Colin Sent on 10/31/2013Riki gave me exactly what I wanted for my wedding cake - a beautiful design that actually tasted as good as it looked! He made it easy to change my order before finalizing the price - number of servings and flavor choices. I wanted a particular color for the bead decoration that was included in the design, and he matched it perfectly. You and your guests will not be disappointed - I received lots of compliments on the look and taste of my cake! -

Leah Sent on 08/26/2013Riki from ABC was great to work with. Throughout the planning process, Riki was very accessible and responded to my emails quickly. When I started pricing wedding cakes, I was stunned at how outrageously expensive some vendors are. To save some money, Riki worked with me to create a three-tier cake that fed 80 people and a sheet cake that fed the rest of our guests. This is a great option for those who don't want to spend thousands on their cake. Most importantly, our cake was beautiful and absolutely delicious. Definitely not the typical dry, boring wedding cake. I highly recommend using ABC! -

One of my favorites part of using the ABC is that instead of you keeping the top of your wedding cake for your one year anniversary the ABC will actually make you a new one for you to enjoy on your one year anniversary! How great is that!? -

Jessica Sent on 10/19/2015Not only was our wedding cake beautiful, it was absolutely delicious!! I can't count how many mediocre wedding cakes I've tasted but Riki and his team know what they are doing - the Princess cake is to die for. We got so many compliments on the cake - everyone loved it!
NOTE: DOUBLE CHECK THE SERVINGS THEY TELL YOU FOR CAKE SIZES -they really underestimate the number of people the cakes will serve and not everyone will eat cake. We did our original estimate based on 120 people and our cake was three tier - 6", 10", 14." We were told that would only serve 90 people (including the top layer because we hadn't planned on saving it) and that we would need an additional sheet cake to serve another 25 people. After doing a little research we did not get the sheet cake because we also had some other deserts (macarons which Albemarle also made that were delicious!, and some other cookies and bars). Our final count was 125 people and we ended up with lots of leftover cake: the entire 6" tier of the cake plus about 5 takeout boxes full.
We live out of town so we emailed a week before to have a tasting cake made and picked that up on a Saturday along with a slice of the princess cake which they have daily. I emailed back and forth with Riki to get pricing quotes and was a little disappointed he preferred email because some of the information I feel would have been better conveyed on the phone. I sent him pictures of what I liked and he essentially replicated the design of another cake with our colors which was beautiful! There did seem to be some communication issues but that may have been partially my fault; I sent a picture of my dress thinking that he might prefer to be artistic with the design and use my dress as inspiration like I know some pastry chefs like to do.
Overall, we couldn't be happier with how it turned out! Seriously, I still dream about the cake. :) -

Albemarle Baking Company utilized the flavors that we wanted and the cake turned out even prettier and more delicious than our tasting cake had been. That said, if I were going to work with ABC again, I would be more specific and communicative prior to obtaining the tasting cake. We sent ABC a picture of our inspiration cake prior to the tasting (it had non-cream colored icing), along with our desired flavors. We made a special trip to Charlottesville to pick up our tasting cake (there was also a snafu during the pick-up), and despite the snafu, we loved the cake. After letting them know we liked the cake, they told us that our inspiration cake would require a different type of icing. I was fairly annoyed that that icing was not on our tasting cake, when ABC should have known we wanted colored icing. In the end, we chose a different cake design that was not what we *really* wanted, which sort of stunk. But it still worked out fine, because the cake was lovely and tasty. (lovelier and tastier than one expects wedding cake to be). -

Chiara Sent on 09/29/2018I will start by saying that I LOVE ABC and I frequently go there to get bread/pastries and have always had a great experience. So, ABC was the first place we looked when we were looking into our wedding cake baker. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed. At first, everything was fine. I ordered some sample cakes to taste. In fairness, they were very accommodating and made sure we had the cakes during graduation weekend, which I'm sure was very busy for them. The cakes were honestly mediocre at best and we ended up deciding to go with their Princess Cake (which is one of their regular cakes) which was pretty good. Once we had decided, I followed up with Gerry and asked several basic questions via email, including questions about pricing, decoration options, whether they would deliver the cake, etc. It took 2 WEEKS to get a response. 2 weeks. While I certainly don't expect to get an immediate response with my questions, taking 2 weeks to respond to an email is just unacceptable. I think a couple of business days would be fine, but 2 weeks is not. When we finally did get our responses, I asked for more options/information about decoration options, and Gerry offered one suggestion and then basically left us completely in the dark. He gave us no ideas, did not offer any suggestions as to where to get more ideas, did not tell us what ABC has more/less experience doing, etc. All of this left us pretty frustrated and we decided to go with another baker, b/c we felt that if we were getting this little attention when they were trying to earn our business, how would they treat us once they already had it? When I emailed Gerry to tell him we had changed our minds, we never got a response. I was pretty shocked. As a business owner, I would expect that when a client who has said they want to work with you suddenly changes their mind, you should ask what went wrong/try to fix it. Overall, bad experience. I would recommend it for bread/pastries though.
