A wedding is about creating the wedding someone has imagined, capturing those moments and delivering it on the biggest day of their lives. Planning a wedding is about understanding the bride and groom and making those moments come alive through a centerpiece, a floral arrangement, and so much more. Looking back on that day, Xenia at Riviera Blue did that and so much more, I could feel those pieces of inspiration in the smallest details of that day.

Love in the Time of COVID
Our lovely wedding turned out to be a testimony to Love in the Time of COVID. But, it would not have been possible without the help of Xenia. When the pandemic and bureaucratic complications had thrown multiple obstacles in front of us, we knew we needed help. We called Xenia and within a short time, her patience, diplomacy, and organizational skills yielded our much-sought-after approval to wed in a civil ceremony. We rejoiced at the prospect of a wedding date that was just one week away. Hooray! At last we could finalize details of flowers, caterers, and colors to make the tiny event special. The virus with its international travel restrictions had prevented us from having even a small gathering of friends and family from “back home,”
What we didn’t know was that the Greek prime minister would call for a total national lockdown that threatened to interrupt the plan. When we expressed this fear to Xenia, she arranged for the city hall (Dimos) to hold our wedding on the eve of the lockdown. Only problem was that the ceremony had to be scheduled just three hours later. After months of trying to marry, we would have been happy to marry in blue jeans in a parking lot, but instead Xenia arranged for a fabulous photographer, a wedding cake, and my dream bouquet. Amazing, amazing. If she can do that in three hours, imagine what she will do for your wedding! Don’t try to do it yourself and don’t go with any other event planner. Xenia and RivieraBlu are the best.

A wedding in the time of COVID
A wedding in the time of COVID.
Rosemary and I had some major obstacles which almost prevented us getting married in Athens, Greece in 2020. In common with many other families that year, we experienced lockdowns, bereavements, loss of employment and obstructive bureaucracy. Through it all we stayed positive and kept trying to get an appointment at the local town hall for our civil wedding. By the end of the summer we were using the services of a wedding planner ('Xenia' - Riviera Blu Events) to help us negotiate the defences of the town hall. We had every possible piece of paper imaginable, yet it still looked impossible. We had been trying hard since June to make our date, but without success.
Then... all of a sudden, one Thursday in November when Rosemary and I were in the centre of Athens in the early afternoon we got a call from Xenia.
"There will be ANOTHER lockdown starting tomorrow morning 6am, but the town hall have said they have one appointment at 6pm this evening if you can get here in time! Do you want to get married tonight?"
We both answered "YESSS!!" and started running!
Of course, we only had the one car in the centre of the city, my old much loved Willys Jeep, plus we had the L'il White Dawg with us. Thank heavens 'LWD' had just had a bath only that morning. A good omen - she looked dazzlingly white! It was 1530 when I left Rosemary who went to the hairdressers in her wedding gown and bouquet. She would then jump into a taxi and meet me at the town hall in Voula on the south side of the city where we were due to marry next to the beautiful ocean. I drove with LWD in the Jeep through the Athens traffic and got to Glyfada to meet up with Hannah and Lawrence, my long suffering offspring, who would be our only guests and witnesses.
On the way, I heard that Xenia had arranged a photographer. Of course... photographs?! They would be nice to have after the event, but light was failing as dusk approached... I thought to myself, no problem, bring a photographer, but I am not sure what sort of images he or she will get. Then on the way through town, we got the call, "can you please hurry because the light is not good and the photographer needs to have you here to take the photos before the event if you can manage it..."
As I stepped out of the Jeep at the side of the ocean in my nice new wedding suit and busied myself getting LWD out of the vehicle I heard the click, click, click of a camera - it was Effie Grigoriou. Rosemary was there, she looked amazing and my son and daughter were there too.
With less than two hours notice, Effie had come to take photos at a wedding where she had very little time, soon it would be dark. With foreigners she had never met and a little white dog that would steal the show...
We are SO pleased with the results. Effie was completely wonderful in every way. Technically and personally. The beautiful images speak for themselves. We would highly recommend Effie as a wedding photographer for anybody's wedding. Even for those that are planned more than two hours in advance!
God Bless you Effie and Xenia, you saved the year for us and we will never forget your kindness. On the 5th November 2020 in a year of global crisis, suffering and loss, near the sea, in the south of the beautiful City of the Gods, you made our dream come true.
