About Devin Canfield
From the resonant chords and choruses of Bruce Springsteen to the introspective nuanced musings of Pink Floyd, my musical influences have been as diverse as they have been transformative, shaping both my artistry and my life. Growing up in New Jersey with Bruce's soulful storytelling about the blue-collar experience, I found a voice that articulated the struggles and dreams of ordinary people—struggles I saw reflected in my own life and those around me. From Pink Floyd, I discovered how soundscapes could be meditative, creating space for introspection and complex emotion. These artists taught me that music can convey narratives that are deeply personal yet resonate universally.
Throughout my life, I’ve lived in Northwest New Jersey, the greater Philadelphia area, Upstate South Carolina, the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Nashville’s Music City, Ocean City, Maryland, and now the beach coast of Delaware. My musical journey has taken me through Philadelphia, South, Central and North Jersey, New York City, Asheville (NC), Greenville (SC), Charlotte (NC), Newport News (VA), and so many other places. Yet, despite all these influential locations, it’s the hills & woods, my foundational upbringing, and the cultural textures of my hometown in Northwest New Jersey that truly solidify my personal and musical DNA. The rugged landscapes and small-town expierences I grew up in remain the foundation of my identity—an anchor in my ever-evolving artistic journey.
I’ve been playing music my whole life, picking up my first guitar when I was only nine. Before that, when I was only 2 years old I could sing and recite Bruce Springsteen songs, pretending to be the Bruce himself while singing through my dad's DJ equipment. By 14, I was writing my own riffs. By 18, I was in the studio recording my first song. By 22, I was recording my first album in a professional studio. I spent most of my twenties failing and trying to knock on every door and flip every stone of learning what the music industry was all about. In 2024, I launched Ridge Road Records as an independent label to release and publish my own music—driven by a mission not only to amplify my voice but also to support other artists I’ve been working with, who, like me, seek to create music with depth, authenticity, and raw honesty. Ridge Road Records represents more than just a business venture; it’s a vision for what music can be when it’s untethered from commercial and corporate greed, allowing for creativity that speaks as raw as possible.
Over the years, I’ve released music under various entities—Canfield & Company and Crosstown Walkers—yet it took me until my late 20s to release music as upfront as possible under my own name, Devin Canfield. During those years, I put out numerous DIY projects—self-produced, written, engineered, and marketed entirely on my own with the help of many other talented people who supported the process. Some of those albums include Fox on Ridge, Lilies (which later became Singles), Gemini, Burning the Boat, Delmarva (Live), MH50 (Live), and my debut full-length album, For The Poor. While For The Poor featured only acoustic performances, it was a testament to my devotion to songwriting and my DIY, grassroots approach—symbolic of what Ridge Road Records stands for: a commitment to following creative instincts, no matter the challnges of life circumstances.
My music, which I like to call “Northeast Alternative,” is a sonic blend shaped by the likes of Dave Matthews Band, Bruce Springsteen, Blink-182, Angels & Airwaves, Pink Floyd, Sam Fender, Kings of Leon, The 1975, Mac Miller, CHON, James Taylor, Goo Goo Dolls, Ruston Kelly, Elevation Worship and countless others. These artists were prophetic to me—each bringing their own textures and philosophies—and I’ve woven those elements into a sound that aims to be both familiar and distinctly mine.
Beyond the technical and stylistic aspects, I am committed to exploring themes that resonate deeply with both myself and the collective human experience. Mental health, divine contemplation, and the trials and triumphs of life flow through my lyrics. My hope is that by sharing the challenges and revelations I’ve encountered, listeners may find a sense of camaraderie and understanding—an outlet. I believe music is a divinely inspired mode of communication, a channel to express what words alone cannot. For me, it’s about transcending boundaries, illuminating dark places, and offering connection and solace to those who may feel isolated in their experiences.
As I continue forward with Ridge Road Records, my vision is clear: to create records. To write and release songs. To package music in art—art that prioritizes vulnerability and truth over commercial appeal or the analytical nuances of modern culture. Every project, whether mine or another artist’s, is an opportunity to honor the human experience and the artist’s ability to reflect their soul in all its complexity. I want Ridge Road Records to stand for integrity, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to the stories that deserve to be heard.
My music reflects a life lived fully and openly—a testament to the enduring power of art to heal, connect, and inspire.
