Turkish weddings don't involve household gifts or bridal registries; instead, guests bring cash and traditional gold coins, or cumhuriyet altini, which are sold at any jewelry shop in Turkey. Following Turkish custom, after our first dance we'll come around to kiss everyone and collect their gifts, or guests may pin them to Autumn's dress. Odd as this may seem from an American standpoint, it is practical and a lot easier to fit in a suitcase. Who needs toasters? Cold hard gold, straight up!
That said, many of our guests are traveling from far away at great expense to share this special day with us. Your presence is gift enough! Please feel welcome to join or abstain from this part of the ceremony as you like; we don't expect anything from you except to have a good time.
For those who aren't able to come to our wedding, but still wish to send a gift, please consider making a donation to support one of these worthy causes instead:
Anti-Slavery (to combat human trafficking through local partnerships)
Transitions Global (to help rehabilitate female survivors of sex slavery)
Humane Society International (to protect and defend the voiceless)
Marriage Equality USA (so that ALL Americans can celebrate as we are about to)
