In life, and behind the lens of a camera, Erika & Ryan Rowell are partners. Together, the couple is taking the business of photography to a new level where two sets of eyes equal one fabulous result.

It was the love of the lens that brought them together in the first place. They met on the job, doing photography for a large Barrie retailer in a studio setting. After taking more than 5000 family portraits and other traditional photos, they yearned to break free and offer a fresh approach to capturing memories. They knew having two separate perspectives behind the camera, one male and one female, would result in truly unique photography.

It’s been three years since they opened Rowell Photography and they’ve been successfully snapping their way through weddings, family portraits, corporate events, and even well-known movie and television sets ever since. They co-founded “Barrie’s Next Top Model”, and are also the official photographers for major activities at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

Being on-site roving photographers has given them the freedom to shoot their work anytime, anywhere, at the convenience of their clients. They specialize in lifestyle photography. This means their photos are a more sincere representation of the people in the pictures, not simply a superficial image being sold by so many commercial studios.

“There are thousands of households in Barrie with the exact same family photo on the mantle in their living room. We provide a more candid result. We make a person’s personality come alive in our photos,” said Erika. “Many times we accompany a family on a fun outing, and we’ll just blend into the background. That’s when we do the real work. When people relax, the end result is sincere and unique to that person, or group.”

They even bring a new twist to old wedding traditions. Before the ceremony begins, Hanchar takes still photos of the bride and her bridesmaids, and Rowell does the same with the groom and groomsmen.

“We do this so the bride and groom can later experience in sequence the activities and emotions of their spouse during the time they were separated before the ceremony. The pictures tell the story. It’s wonderful to have those to look at after the wedding,” said Hanchar. “Plus it is beneficial to have a female perspective and a male perspective represented in the photos. It’s not just one-sided, and I think that brings a different level of ingenuity to our shots.”
