I started shooting with a completely manual film camera that my dad bought in 1973 when I was born. I had to adjust every setting myself. There wasn’t auto anything. This approach taught me about how to control my camera to get the results that I want. I moved on to more sophisticated film cameras and then to digital cameras. My current digital SLR camera has more computing power than most of the computers in Best Buy, and the automatic settings do just fine most of the time. But I don’t want just fine. I want to take the best picture of my life every time I press the shutter. So, I rely on my experience to know when to make adjustments and I find from time to time, I’ve taken the best picture of my life.
