Ring boxes, yay or nay? (Subscription boxes)

Ariana, on February 7, 2023 at 4:15 AM Posted in Planning 0 16
I’ve been reading a view posts of people who regretted not getting one of the ring boxes during their engagements and I wanted to hear from people who either love their boxes or could live without them…thoughts?

I didn't, and won't be, purchase one. My FH ring came in a nice zippered leather pouch and will be using that to hold the rings during the ceremony. I don't see the point of a fancy ring box except for pictures, but I may be missing something.

I got a double ring box for about $7 from the jewelry district in my city for the ceremony. If it was more than that, I would’ve skipped it.

A velvet pouch was softer and less bulky for our ring holder to carry in his fitted tux jacket. I wear my wedding ring everyday so an empty box is clutter.

I have ornate boxes and I love mine. I have a beautiful embossed glass one in my dressing room upstairs, which can hold multiple rings. Then I have an octagon velvet box on my bedroom nightstand, where I can put my ring if I forgot to take it off earlier and don’t want to go upstairs again. I used the octagon velvet ring for photos before the wedding, and it photographed beautifully. And they both look much more beautiful on display in the house than just the generic box that comes from the jeweler.

By "ring boxes", do you mean the subscription boxes (one of them is called The Ring Box) that send you wedding themed stuff (hats, ornaments, water bottles, etc)? Or do you mean actual boxes to put the rings in?

We got a nice one that we love off of Etsy (hopefully, anyway, we just recently ordered so we haven’t seen it in person yet). But part of our rationale was that we were also looking at ring box alternatives, and this particular one had flowers matching our floral and theme. Yeah, we probably won’t use it after the wedding day (we did get a separate three slot box for actual ring storage after the wedding), but we can always donate or sell it after if we don’t want to keep all the clutter after the wedding. So ours was 100% about aesthetics, but it wasn’t that pricy so meh.

I had gotten a few boxes from The Ring Box and also some boxes from Something New Bridal Box! They were fun to get for a little while, but the novelty wore off after a few boxes. I got themed hats, wine glasses, shirts, coffee mugs, water bottles, balloons, bridal shower decor, bachelorette party decor, planning organizers, vow books, ornaments, jewelry, etc. I found that I used some - but definitely not all - of the items. My recommendation is to sign up for somewhere between a 1 to 3 month subscription, and then make a decision on whether you want to renew it or not once you've received a few boxes and can gauge whether you think they're worth the cost.

I didn't get any subscription boxes during my time of engagement/wedding planning.

In my opinion there are so few items that are actually worth receiving in those boxes because once the planning is over there are things that are rendered useless (items labeled with: Bride to be, fiance, etc.). Between those boxes and items purchased for the wedding, it all piles up quick. This is just my personal opinion, but if you want to try at least one out, do so, and see if it works for you.

Rabreena brings up a really good point about what can really only be used during the engagement or before the wedding! I ended up selling a lot of the items that I got in the boxes (many of them unused), since they had "Bride" or "Fiancee" or "Future Mrs" listed on them and I knew I wouldn't really use them, especially after the wedding. However, some items also had things like "Off The Market" or "Mrs" or "Wifey" written on them, and I ended up keeping some (but not all) of those for after the wedding, and I still actually use some of them even now. One thing you could do instead is put together your own box by going on Etsy or Amazon and searching for items that you know you'll like and that you'll use. That way, you won't end up paying for a bunch of items that you might not end up using from the subscription box. If the thought of being surprised by what you're sent appeals to you, the subscription box could be worth trying it out for a month or two to see what you think.

My fiance still has the vintage ring box, but unfortunately the hinges broke due to old age (the box was made out of some one hundred year old plastic so it shattered) so it doesn't open up and you have to treat it like a lid so it is still technically usable. I am making a new ring with the stones since the filigree is broken in a lot of places and the jeweler said the stones are being held on by a thread and will easily break if something is not done about it. I just said, fudge it, maybe just make another ring with the stones and with his grandma's blessings, that is what we did. I will likely get a new ring box with this ring.

Omg I am so sorry! I started the ring box madness.

On the subscription box end; I did look into it when I was first engaged. All the reviews were good but also stated how most of the stuff is fun but not practical. After spending a few years on wedding forums I have seen many people selling and even giving away the stuff that came in the boxes.
I'd say save your money for other things, or even go buy a shirt/mug/ornament/etc.

Oh wait, subscription boxes? I am not generally a big fan of them, but if someone gifted me one I wouldn't mind. I think the problem with the wedding related ones is that after the wedding, most of the swag becomes obsolete and I just find that kind of a waste. Ever since watching that one Red Letter Media episode parodying Loot Crate and related subscription boxes, I kind of got turned off from the concept of subscription boxes.

I didn't sign up for any subscription boxes, and I don't feel like I missed out. We had such a long engagement (thanks, COVID), and a good chunk of that time we weren't actively planning anything, so I probably wouldn't have wanted the reminder. The only times I really felt the desire for stuff that said "bride" or anything like that were when we first got engaged and about 3 months out. I got myself a mug that said "does this ring make me look engaged," and it got donated along with anything else we replaced with wedding gifts after the wedding. If there's anything specific you'd like (mugs, shirts, etc.), it's probably more worthwhile to just buy yourself the individual items.

I got one, and it's over priced for the cheap things that you get In them. I only say that it is worth it is because you feel spoiled. I just like the serotonin boost it gives me from feeling spoiled, but it is really overpriced.
