Keep the dress style to few layers to help reduce the cost. Make sure there is no details that make the dress harder to hem -- like lace or appliques that would have to be adjusted. But check for a seamstress for some guidelines and pricing ahead of time.

I agree with Pat. Less layers help keep the cost down. I think it is harder to do lace and appliqués bc you have to make sure that it is laid right and match the rest of the pattern or detail of the dress. I do agree with finding a good seamstress who knows how to meet your needs.

I tend to budget $500 for alterations for layers, bustle, taking things in, and all that. I'm short but not petite - the bustle tends to be the bigger expense. It really varies by person, but my $500 rule has held up with most people I know.

Thanks for the practical advice. I'll try to choose simpler styles. I've been looking at Azazie recently but haven't made a purchase yet.

I agree completely! But now I'm wondering if there are any skirts that can hug my body perfectly.

I think that you will be able to find the dress that will fit you and your style. You will have to try dresses on to see how they fit bc every dress fits differently
