My Dress Came In! (and I took the worst picture) Alteration Advice?

So excited because my dress wasn't supposed to arrive until New years day, but it arrived super early! I got to try it on and talk to someone from alterations, but not the same person I talked to when I bought it, I have to call him today because my alterations are different from their normal price list. Anyone have experience with David's bridal alterations? How much did it cost you and was it worth it?

That dress is beautiful! I got my dress from DB but if I needed alterations I would be going to a local tailor. They're much less expensive and you can support small business!

I love your dress! I got mine from DB as well and would not do alterations with them. Find a local seamstress.

DB Bride here. I went to them for alterations. It was pricey, and I wish I'd thought to go to a local seamstress. It took 3 appointments to get everything done: one for the hem (we tried to sort out the bustle, but the lady doing it clearly had no idea what she was doing. I have a satin ball gown dress and she was trying to do the same bustle as the a line lace dress that went before me.) Second appointment for the bustle (with a different lady) and third because I had lost weight and we had to take it in some. There is also a little lace piece that goes across the front that they had trouble getting straight. It fits perfect now and I love it! But a smart bride probably would've ran after that first appointment.

If your alterations fall outside of their normal price range, what do you need done? You don't need to answer that here, but keep it in mind. I personally did not go to DB, but I've heard that there's some alterations they flat-out won't do (basically anything that changes the structure or style of the dress). I echo PP in taking your beautiful dress to one or more alterations specialists for estimates and better quality service. Just do your research first.

I got my dress at DB and will have alterations done elsewhere. Another bride found her seamstress via thumbtack.com. Might want to check them out.

Please do not have your alterations done at Davids. Please find a reputable tailor or seamstress near you to do so. Not only will the alterations be less expensive they will be of a better quality

The dress is beautiful and I agree with everyone else, get the alteration done else where. Cost will depend on what you need done, that style of hem is normally a little more expensive due to the layers.

But, with a year and a half away you might wait on the alterations. Just a thought.

Your dress is beautiful! I would take the dress somewhere else for alterations. I have no experience with DB alterations even though my dress is from there. I've heard some bad things.

I'd definitely do alterations elsewhere. I bought my dress at David's and the cost estimate they gave me to let out a little along my hips and take my straps in was nearly half what I spent on my dress. A local seamstress is charging me less than $100 for the same work.

I got my second dress from DB and had 3 weeks for alterations. They did great and were really helpful. I had to have it taken in, shoulders adjusted, cups added, hem, bustle, cleaned and some beads fixed, and they were 350. My original dress had similar alterations at a boutique and they were a flat rate of 400. I can't compare to a local seamstress as I didn't go anywhere else, but it was comparable to my other dress so I guess I didn't think twice about it.

I got my dress from DB and had alterations done there. I heard the same as all PP have said- they're expensive, questionable quality, etc. However, not knowing an outside seamstress that I could take my dress to was giving me anxiety. To me it was worth it to pay more and know that they work with wedding dresses everyday. Also, my local DB had a very very good head seamstress who was highly praised by people I know. I needed a little taken in on the top (lace) and an adjustment to the neckline, a hem of 1 satin layer and 4 layers of tulle and an 18 point bustle. This cost me around $300. Again, not the cheapest but it made me comfortable and one less worry so I did it. So happy I did!

    ETA: your dress is beautiful!!!!

That dress looks incredible on you! Congrats on finding the one! I got my dress from DB but found a local tailor to do my alterations; I found her through Yelp and made sure she had previous reviews from other brides. It was a lot cheaper and they did things DB wouldn't. From what ive read online, DB alterations are expensive, shady, and have questionable quality. A note: David's Bridal has restrictions on how they're allowed to alter their designer collection (like Jenny Packham, Vera Wang, etc), so if you wanted to add or change something like sleeves or the neckline, they will not do it.
