Dominika is right. Some shops are closed for the whole month, so sometimes it's not as fun. When I went to Italy in early August a few years ago, it was over 100 degrees almost every day for 3 weeks. Hot hot hot!
some parts get very crowded while some don't ie paris is half empty as the people who live their leave in august (it has been compared to a month of sundays)
I wouldn't say it makes in unbearable (eg Rome is always crowded) but you have to go knowing it
Heat wise - yep some parts get boiling depends what your tolerance is
Some places get closed as people are on holiday but in high tourist areas restaurants and larger cafes will be along with shops while some smaller places are shut. In not so major cities more will be closed.
Personally I don't mind it but then I'm use to it

Yep, it is definitely hot, expensive and crowded in Italy and the south of France in August. Schools get out across Europe in late June and everyone heads south to Spain, Italy, southern France for the month. Can you delay your trip to September or October? The temps are cooler, the prices are much better, crowds are gone. Fall is the value season in Europe and prices are amazing. Or, you could go north for your honeymoon - England, Ireland, Scotland are fabulous, Scandinavia is spectacular and you have the long days in the northern hemisphere.
I was in Italy a number of years ago in August and it was about 100 in Rome, it was milder but not much along the Amalfi Coast and in Tuscany. The old buildings like the Vatican Museum weren't air conditioned then and it's like being in a furnace. I've been to Paris twice in August and the weather was very different. Very hot ten years ago and low 60's two years ago. I've been to Paris in late October and it was bitter cold. Christmas week was rainy & chilly but not awful. It's the chance you take. Julia mentioned Scotland, the reason I go to Europe in August is to attend the Fringe Festival and the Military Tattoo in Edinburgh. Good Times! Except for 2011 when it rained more the week I was there than it had in years but it is much cooler.
If you really want to go in August go to the places that other europeans go on holiday (often to escape the weather where they are from)
The French head to southern france
The germans, Brits and some Scandinavia often head to spain or portugal or often one of the many spanish islands (There are some with a bit of a bad rep but many are lovely and even the ones who have a rep for being party islands arent all that ie Ibiza is party on one side and oh so lovely on the other. Lots of Islands are lovely)
The italians head to tuscany or rimini or another seaside place in italy
- it is possible but if you want italy and france stay away from cities
But Scandinavia, Britain and Ireland will be cooler in August and while August is summer all over europe less is shut (actually nothing really) because it isn't so hot that people have to leave but you don't get the weather that you would in other parts of europe (70's are most common)
