Plenty of people get married legally then have their ceremony and reception at a later date. Since those are essentially optional in the whole wedding process, theres no time limit of when they can be done. Some people do it a few months after the legal marriage, others a year, some 10+ years!
Though it's best to be honest with your guests and call the later ceremony a vow renewal or celebration of marriage since you can only be married once.

    Hey there, Michelle!

A marriage license is the document issued, either by a church or state authority, authorizing a couple to marry. You need it in order to get legally married. The license is simply the legal permission. It does not mean you're legally married. Once you get your license (and while it's valid), you have to be married by a person who is authorized under state law to do it.

In New York state, the license is valid for 60 days or 180 days for active military personnel. The expiration date on a license changes from state to state (Marriage Laws by State).

Once you're legally married, you will be given a marriage certificate.

I hope this clear up any confusion!

If you were to get legally married in March of next year, you could plan a vow renewal with a reception whenever you like! It could be in 1 year, 10 years or even more! As Chandra advised, many couples do this Smiley smile

You can get legally married and then celebrate your ceremony whenever. We got legally married in June last year and celebrated our wedding ceremony in April this year.
