In 1799, George Washington gave Woodlawn to his step-grand-daughter, Eleanor "Nelly" Custis and his nephew, Lawrence Lewis, as a wedding present. Tradition credits Nelly with introducing the lace veil and white dress into wedding fashion. Throughout Nelly's lifetime and into the twentieth century, Woodlawn was renowned for the gracious hospitality of its hosts and the beauty of its historic and pastoral setting. George Mason’s Gunston Hall Weddings Say “I do” on the historic grounds of George Mason’s Gunston Hall. You and your guests will have an experience to remember as you walk in the footsteps of our founding fathers. Weddings at Gunston Hall are truly a special occasion and can include the use of the grounds in front of the home of George Mason, the soon to be updated Ann Mason Room located inside our visitor center (updates occurring May-June 2018) and several intimate courtyards. Gunston Hall can host a variety of wedding venue options including: 2 hour wedding ceremonies with photography on the grounds, 5 hour receptions, and our most popular option of an 8 hour rental for both ceremony and reception. Please note the interior of the Gunston Hall mansion is not available for rental and events aren’t allowed in the historic garden behind the house. The Yellow Barn is our primary event venue, with seating for 50 to 300 for any type of event. We offer outdoor ceremonies for up to 150 guests adjacent to the venue beneath our lovely metal and stonework gazebo. The Yellow Barn has recently been updated to include a bride's room, a groom's room, a built-in bar area, and has been given a more "rustic-barn" look in the interior. Even though it looks like a barn, it offers the conveniences of full restrooms, heating, and air conditioning. The Barn also includes a professional catering kitchen, with ovens, refrigeration, ice machine and more. Our second venue, American Celebration on Parade, features an event space among 20 full size parade floats, with seating for up to 600.
