The Nashville Bridge Company was organized in 1902 by Mr. Arthur J. Dyer, a graduate of the Vanderbilt Engineering School. The company headquarters was built in downtown Nashville, on the east bank of the Cumberland River. For decades, this was a hub of construction for business and later for the U.S. Army and Navy in World War II. The company was sold by the Dyer family in 1969. Much of the old headquarters complex was demolished but renovations began on the Bridge Building in 2010 as part of the riverfront redevelopment initiative. In 2013, the Bridge Building was awarded LEED-Platinum Certification for energy-efficiency and environmental design.

The Cumberland River Compact Dragon Boat Festival is going on its 13th year of hosting the Dragon Boat races off the East Bank Landing of the Cumberland River, just at the end of Lower Broadway in Downtown Nashville. A series of four-boat heats will race a roughly 200 meter stretch of the Cumberland River between the Woodland Street Bridge to the Shelby Street Walking Bridge, to the Grand Champion prize. The races engage Nashville’s most competitive teams to claim the Grand Champion title, all the while fundraising to support the work of the Cumberland River Compact to keep the Cumberland River and its tributaries clean and healthy for future generations.
This year, proceeds from the event will allow the Cumberland River Compact to expand its youth education programming, like Creek Critters, to more schools that fall on the Tennessee Priority List. The program takes live and preserved aquatic specimens into schools and uses interactive games to teach students about aquatic ecosystems and food webs, and demonstrates the skills of environmental scientists.
