About
On WeddingWire since 2021
The Old Carter Barn is a new wedding venue located in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania. It is open for weddings May- Early November. Originally a dairy and a turkey farm, the barn had been left vacant for over 50 years. 5-time TONY nominated playwright Douglas Carter Beane and composer Lewis Flinn decided to rescue the structure and started a 5 year renovation. They cleaned out 100 years of dirt and muck, straightened the building, restored the post and beams, added windows, replaced floors, fixed the roof, and added staircases. Electric was brought in as well as accessible bathrooms. Full of eclectic charm and details, bespoke light fixtures and drama, the barn is ready to make your wedding a magical event!
Facilities and Capacity
The main level of the barn offers over 3,500 sq feet of flexible use space. There are two main areas, the “new” barn section (1,440 sq feet) faces the lake and is used for dinner with a seated capacity up to 158. The adjoining “old” barn section (2,000 sq feet) is the main entrance and features an antique bar in the corner (with refrigerator). This area can be used for a reception area, buffet setup, and after dinner dancing. In addition to an accessible restroom, there is access to a mezzanine level (500sq ft- which could be used for a DJ) and balcony area just for fun. There are built in fans and dramatic lighting throughout as well as a music system with wall mounted speakers ready to connect to your Bluetooth device. We also have mismatched wooden chairs, 6 large wooden farm tables, and assorted tables which can be used. We also provide linens for the tables and event insurance!

There are also mens and womens restroom facilities and a large area designated for catering prep with tables and refrigerator.
The lakefront gazebo, built in the late 1800’s, has also been lovingly restored and offers a perfect setting for wedding ceremonies complete with wooden benches for guests overlooking Lake Carey. An adjoining 500 square foot hand-laid stone patio can be used for a pre or post ceremony reception where guests can mingle and watch the bald eagles and blue herons fly by. Douglas Carter Beane grew up on the Old Carter Farm which his grandparents bought in the 1950's and used as a turkey farm. When Doug inherited the property in 1998, the property and old barn had been empty since the late 1970's. Lewis Flinn, his husband, and he would look up at the old crumbling structure and wonder what to do with it. They work as a playwright and composer of Broadway musicals and live in New York City and renovating the barn was never a priority. Finally, they bit the bullet and in 2017, they found John McNamara Construction and began a 3 year renovation. When Covid hit and theater shut down, the family moved full time to the Farm and used the barn renovation as their creative outlet. The project just grew and grew. Windows were added, light fixgtures created, electricity brought in, bars and balconies added. They floated a 100 year old gazebo across the lake and renovated that as well! They are exicited to finally share the Old Carter Barn with the community and create joyous memories for couples of all types in this special space.
