The Vicksburg, originally the Hotel Vicksburg, is the tallest building in the heart of downtown and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Mississippi's first “skyscraper,” the hotel is iconic of the Delta's prosperity during the 1920s. Other historic hotels downtown are long gone due to either the 1953 tornado or the urban renewal efforts of the 1970s. The Vicksburg remains standing, but the hotel doors shuttered in 1979.
To preserve the building, the former hotel rooms have been converted into apartments and the main lobby and ballroom are rented out for special events. A commercial kitchen with walk-in cooler is available for use by outside caterers. Each venue can accommodate 125 for a cocktail party.
The Tea Room, the original hotel lobby, has soaring a twenty-four foot ceiling and two-story arched windows. Designed to resemble an English baronial hall, the room is paneled in wood, painted white, and the floors are terrazzo, ideal for dancing. An adjoining bar features the original marble-top check-in counter from the hotel and two vintage telephone booths. The Tea Room measures 48 by 28 feet (1344 square feet) and the bar provides an additional 360 square feet. The room has 15 four-top tables and 60 chairs. Access to the commercial kitchen is to the other side of the room.
The Coral Room is located on the mezzanine which overlooks The Tea Room and features Art Deco reliefs, red oak floors set in a herringbone design, and arched windows. This elegant ballroom has been the scene of numerous cotillions, Miss Mississippi pageant events and a press conference held by Eisenhower in 1947 at which he announced he would accept the nomination for president, if asked. The room measures 25 ½ by 58 feet for a total of 1479 square feet. Table and chair rental for this space is not included in the rental and must be made by separate arrangement through an approved vendor.
Both rooms maybe rented for a single event for a total capacity of 250. For example, the bride might elect to have the ceremony held in the Coral Room with a reception to follow in the Tea Room.
Outside catering is allowed on premises provided that such vendor is approved and provides a certificate of insurance and proof of other necessary licensing. The Vicksburg does offer some off street parking. For more information on parking, handicap accessibility and rates, please call The Vicksburg at 601.630.2921.
