It all started with a cough, an illness, and then an awareness bracelet which led to an undiscovered talent to design imaginative, elegant jewelry.
When my daughter was a few days into her freshman year in high school (2003), she developed a cough that kept her home and in and out of hospitals. Kristy never returned to high school, instead she was home schooled for the duration. Eight months after visiting dozens of specialists, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) was diagnosed as the culprit (it's a complex, debilitating illness that affects the brain and multiple body systems). It's unusual in someone so young, and thus far, CFS has no cure.
With so much time being spent home together, and an abundance of creativity, a wonderful partnership blossomed. We became handmade jewelry designers for family and friends and ultimately creating Chic Indulgences. One of our fist jewelry designs was a CFS Awareness bracelet for Kristy and years later a Breast Cancer Awareness Bracelet for me.
Art, creativity, and imagination have always been apart of our home. I'm Cuban and that means vibrant colors, Latin Jazz, and delicious foods and drink. I am also a USC grad – School of Architecture and have designed several high-end homes in the South Bay. As a stay-at-home mom, involvement with the kid's school led to teaching art and running the program, sewing costumes for plays and designing sets, and countless other artistic endeavors.
When I decided to design an awareness bracelet for CFS, I researched the “healing” properties of gemstones and discovered a fascinating world. I was hooked, by the history of the stones, their textures, colors, shapes and their natural beauty.
Of course, I didn't stop there…pearls! Nature is incredible, so many splendid varieties! Then there are all the artisan lampwork beads, like Murano glass; and discovering local glass artists is a real treat. Incorporating their art with mine is something I take very seriously. I want them to feel that I have enhanced their creation, that our partnership has been imaginative.
In December of 2010 I was diagnosed with breast cancer, not the Christmas gift I was hoping for. The next two and half years were difficult to say the least. I didn’t touch a single bead. Eventually my creativity and drive returned, with a new appreciation for a healthy lifestyle, not taking things too seriously and exploring new design styles.
One of those styles was bridal jewelry, Kristy's wedding provided the perfect opportunity to design something exceptional and I haven't stopped, I'm having too much fun. My goal is to enchance a bride's sense of style and beauty with distinctively designed handcrafted jewelry. Every bride plans for a one of a kind day, attention to detail is everywhere. Why shouldn't that attention to detail also be reflected in her jewelry? And why shouldn't those details carry over to her bridal party? Once the bride's necklace is conceived, coordinating jewelry can be designed for the Mother's, Bridesmaids, and the Flowers Girls. Don't settle for jewelry that is produced for everyone, visit our site: http://chic-indulgences.com and see what my imagination can create for you!
