About Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site

Founded in 1726, Brunswick was the first town established in the Cape Fear region. A seat of government and the epicenter of the colony’s overseas trade, Brunswick secured its place in history by serving as the location of the Stamp Act Resistance, the first known successful armed rebellion against British authority in America.

Brunswick met its fate in 1776, when the town was burned by British troops and never rebuilt. It lay nearly undisturbed until 1862, when Confederate forces began construction on Fort St. Philips, and later the massive earthworks of Fort Anderson.

Today Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson is one of North Carolina’s State Historic Sites. Hidden amongst the live oaks and Spanish moss on the western bank of the Cape Fear River, we welcome you to explore this serene and tranquil waterfront setting.

Brunswick Town was a GORGEOUS location for our wedding. We had so many compliments from guests on our choice. My husband is a history buff so this location was just perfect for us. It is extremely inexpensive as well, compared to other wedding venues, if you are on a budget as we were. The only thing to keep in mind is that the location is all that comes with this venue (obviously a state historic site like this isn't going to provide chairs, tables, etc.). Shannon was wonderful to work with leading up to the wedding, she was so helpful and responsive to every question I had (and I had a lot)! More recently Nick has taken over and he was there the day of our wedding, he was wonderful as well. I can't say enough positive things about the location or staff.

We were married here, June 23, 2012. It was SO beautiful (very hot!), and they were so helpful in the process of us being married here. I had to change my dates a few times and they were very accommodating. They were there if we needed them, but stayed in the background. The price was great and I like that we were able to choose our own vendors, and even supply our own wine and beer, which helps A LOT in the cost of a wedding.
