Ankara is not the most exciting destination in Turkey, although it does have some great places to see. It's more of a college town than Istanbul, lacking the spectacular architecture and sheer density; but it is a short jump from many other popular attractions. Here's a few recommendations:

Phallic rocks, underground cities, Anatolian sites
Cappadocia, Adiyaman, Urfa
SOUTH
Mediteranean beaches, tree houses, Greek islands, flaming mountain
Antalya, Belek, Kemer, Olympos, Kas
WEST
Aegean sea, hot springs, ancient cities
Izmir, Efes, Bodrum, Troy, Pamukkale
NORTH
Black Sea coast, more ancient sites
Amasra, Safranbolu, Samsun, Rize, Artvin
And of course Istanbul.
