Planning a Wedding for Under $10K I'm planning my wedding in Houston, TX, keeping a log of all the information I find in hopes it can help others who have less time to plan save some money and find what's right for them. Will have in... 2 Comments | Added on Nov 30 2007 by Kristina S.
I cannot say enough wonderful things about The Courtyard on St. James. Not only is it a beautiful venue (which photographs perfectly), but the entire staff is welcoming, professional, and inspiring. Lori was my venue coordinator, and she was always on the ball, always quick in answering my emails, and always kind. The food was spectacular. I had multiple friends say, "I never remember the food at weddings, but that food was great!" There were so many "extras" Courtyard took care of, like bubble bowls for the flowers, setting out decorations and favors, an aisle runner, coordinating everything, etc.... I could go on forever, but instead I'll just say that this is the perfect venue for any wedding, from small like mine (55 people) to hundreds. Guests are impressed and comfortable.
Patricia is great. She is professional, warm, and talented. She took both our engagement photos and our wedding photos, all of which turned out great. The day of the wedding, my friends and family all commented on how well she blended in. I found that our planning meetings were always enjoyable, and she has a knack for calming my type-A personality with her knowledge and peaceful spirit. As far as the photographs go - wow! I definitely got bang for my buck. She thoroughly covered the event, got every shot I wanted (and some I didn't know I wanted), and has a wonderful eye for setting. I love going through all the photos because they capture the say perfectly. It's almost like reliving everything, which is the whole point of hiring a photographer. I would recommend Patricia highly, even to someone looking to spend a lot more on photographs. You don't sacrifice quality with her at all, and she's totally willing to work with what you need/want, rather than forcing her vision onto you. Yay Patricia! (It's been two weeks since the wedding, so I'm still pretty excited.)
I had two desires in my cake: taste and the look. I literally cut a picture from a magazine and said, "I want my cake to look like this." And they really did deliver! The taste was also spectacular. Most wedding cakes are too sweet, but Cakes by Gina has this great buttery sweetness that is rich, but not overpowering. Everyone loved the cake's taste, and like I said, the look was spot on. The only issue I had was responsiveness. Last minute I basically doubled the amount of cake I wanted (so everyone could have 1 slice chocolate, 1 slice white) and it was very difficult to get in touch with them to make the changes. However, once I did, everything was perfect and they were very apologetic about the communication difficulties. Although she's not cheap, I would highly recommend Gina for a baker.
Robin was great. He met with me, answered my crazy emails (I tend to send a lot because I have a lot of questions), and dealt with my obsessiveness. He also made the night run so smoothly. It's like he knew the type of night I wanted and just made it happen. At the last minute I started panicking about guests getting bored (we're not really dancers) and he did an anniversary dance and a dedication dance perfectly to get them dancing. He cool, calm, and knowledgeable. In fact, he told me everything I needed to know about what happens at a reception so that I was completely prepared. And he worked with my budget. He was awesome.

Beverly owns Chamber Music Unlimited and she helped me get the most bang for my buck for the ceremony music. I could only afford a single musician, but I definitely wanted something classic. I had considered using a cello because I played it as a kid, but she suggested a harp because it can stand on its own much better. It feels more complete. Beverly matched me with Jackie Carpenter, who plays beautifully, owns a gorgeous harp, and is so zen. She listed to what we wanted, suggested a few pieces for us to use, played them for us, and was easy as pie to work with. My grandmother actually said at one point during the prelude, "We all need to go outside right now because we are missing the wonderful harpist playing outside." That's right, my grandmother tried to hijack my wedding guests to listen to the harp instead of letting them ooooh and ahhhh over me. That's how great it all was.
