We loved this venue. They let us use candles in the first floor of the house, and tiki torches outside on the lawn where we had our reception. The lighting was romantic, and they have two outdoor gazebos. It's a very private space, which we liked, and while there was a little noise from the 294 highway, it was not enough to be noticable (the cicadas were louder). We gave our guests Avon Skin So Soft Bug Repellant wipes since they can't spray at the Grove because it is a protected nature reserve. A few mosquitos got a bite in here or there, but none of our guests complained. The space isn't huge - no more than 125 guests - so it's perfect for an intimate to medium-size wedding.
Their food was ok but pricey and we felt that much of the menu was too heavy for an outdoor summer wedding in Chicago. They did, however, accomodate our requests for off-menu items such as gazpacho, proscuitto and melon, and grilled vegetable skewers.
Also, they forgot to serve the wine until the meal was more than halfway over, which was upsetting. In addition, we had asked them to offer our guests sparkling apple juice as an alternative to champagne since many of our guests do not drink alcohol, and they did not do so. I think if I were to do it again, I would have shopped around more to find a caterer whose menu was more imaginative and whose service was more personal.
We were very impressed with Grace's aesthetic vision for how to best use flowers to enhance the wedding venue space and give it the best lighting and well as coloring to suit the mood of our ceremony and reception. Also, she was able to do it within a reasonably budget without sacrificing the look and feel that we wanted. Her floral arrangements were beautiful and romantic, and she helped us last minute when our cake topper refused to stand by putting some beautiful flowers on top of our cake.
We had a neopolitan cake with white buttercream frosting and it was moist, not too sweet, and delicious. They delivered the cake to our venu in Glenview and it looked beautiful. While the staff who work there may not be the brightest, the quality of their cake more than make up for it. It's a traditional European bakery - round or sqaure cakes only - not too many fillings to choose from - but the unbelievable goodness of their cakes makes you think that they don't need to distract you with too many options. The cake here is just plain great.
Cindy Kang helped us plan our wedding of around 115 guests at the Redfield Estate at the Grove. She was very organized, checking with vendors the week leading up to the wedding, which averted a cake mix-up because the baker had gotten confused over what cake we had chosen months earlier. Later, when it was discovered that the ring boy and flower girl had poked a hole in the base of the cake (before we had cut it), Cindy and the florist hid the defect with some carefully placed flowers so none of my guests were the wiser.
Cindy also made the excellent suggestion of donating our flowers to a nursing home after the reception and took care of it for us. She stayed until the end of the reception, making sure everything was properly packed and returned to us. She had purchased picture frames and put photos of us around the house to add a personal touch to the decor and they were all tastefully done. Our little cake topper came back to us too.
In addition, Cindy designed our wedding invitations, menu cards, programs, seating cards, and out-of-town welcome bags. Many of our guests commented on how beautiful the handmade wedding invitations were and on the adorable programs that folded out like a wide accordian. Our gift bags were beautifully made and much appreciate by our out-of-town guests. Cindy found Frango mints with the Chicago skyline on them, and put itineraries for the weekend in each bag. The welcome bag labels had childhood photos of the bride and group attached that she created. She's got a great eye for graphic design and color.
Cindy pays attention to detail, has meticulous execution, and is a very thoughtful and patient wedding planner. She's was very collaborative and easy to work with. We could not have had such a well-organized and beautiful day without her help.
