This is a drop-dead gorgeous venue, but really only at night. During the day, this vintage Jazz-Age penthouse shows its wear and stains a bit too clearly for a bride to be comfortable. (The maintenance team is a bit slow to respond to requests to shampoo stains out of the carpet, etc.) Recommended only for a wedding at sunset or after. But if you do plan on a night wedding, and you love a sophisticated historic setting, this place can't be beat. The view, the lights ... No free guest parking -- you'll need to book a valet service or reserve spaces for your guests at the nearby Pershing Square. But one major bonus: Pick whatever outside caterer you want.
To be blunt, my folks paid for my wedding, and they didn't tell me how much they spent with Duxbury. So I can't talk about value for cost. But the food that they prepared, and the way they treated me like family on my wedding day, those sorts of things put them over the top. I had a very specific vision for my menu -- dressed-up elegant comfort food -- and they got it instantly. I like to groove on unique menu possibilities, and so does Mark Duxbury.
I needed a wedding cake that tasted great. Sounds simple, right? You'd be surprised. After trying way too many cake places, including the well-nigh-legendary Porto's, I have to say that Bee's Knees offered the tastiest, most beautiful, unique cake for the price. (I dare you to try their carrot cake and disagree with me!) I wanted sugared mini-fruits for my cake, something that, at least, at the time, they said they didn't really know much about. But they learned, for me, the customer. I also wanted a fairly unique design, and they picked up on my vision right away. I would use them again in a heartbeat.
Really gorgeous, unique designs. But it's a trade-off: A big one. You don't spend nearly so much as you would if you hire a full-service invitation company. But you have to print out the invites yourself, on your computer. You also have to assemble each invitation by hand.
