My husband and I were married on May 17th, 2008 at The Oaks. We were thrilled with the level of service we received from Heather, Michaela, Susan and the rest of the staff at The Oaks - both in planning the event and on the wedding day. The Oaks is truly a full service venue. The property is gorgeous - our ceremony was held outside at "The Point." They provided us with the space, the food, the rentals - even a van to transport guests to and from the wedding from their hotels. On the day of the wedding we had a dedicated member of the service staff (Carla) to bring us and our parents drinks, food, etc... It allowed us to relax and really enjoy the event.
We did not have a wedding planner and Heather seamlessly managed the arrival of all the different vendors during the day - I didn't even worry that the flowers were in the right place or if the cake had arrived. They took care of everything! The Oaks was extremely flexible with our dinner menu. My husband and I are foodies and wanted to serve a dinner that guests would be talking about for weeks. The chef spent weeks with us working on the menu and we ended up with an amazing meal, offering an Italian station, Mexican station, Greek station and Asian station - none of were even remotely suggested on The Oaks standard menu. The Oaks is not the cheapest place you can have a wedding, but considering all of the services and amenities they included that we did not have to buy elsewhere, I'd consider The Oaks to be a very good value. If you do have your wedding at The Oaks, trust their recommended vendors - we used Shirley at Seasonal Flowers and Julie at Julie Bakes and they were both phenomenal and fairly priced. My father is very, very stingy with compliments, and the morning after the wedding he told me "the event exceeded my wildest expectations!"
(The 4 stars for responsiveness is because Heather works all weekend during the busy season, she was not always available to answer e-mails or phone calls during the week when I typically had questions. This didn't not pose any major problems, just a tiny bit of frustration on my part because I sit in front of my e-mail for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. You just have to be patient and they will always get back in touch.)
Emily and her husband Rob did a superb job of documenting our wedding with photojournalistic style images. Her photos captured the events of the day and emotions of our family and friends. When we first flipped through them we truly relived the event three weeks later. We are glad we opted against hiring a videographer because we didn't even need one. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the posed family shots were just okay. Although the backdrop was pretty, the sunlight in the shots blurred some faces. Emily offered a variety of services as part of the package we purchased, including an album, an online slide show, black and white images, an online photo ordering system and a selection of the images for us to keep forever on a disc - all at very reasonable rate. Emily and Rob have two children and only do two weddings a month, so call her way in advance if you are interested!
Shirley and her staff at Seasonal Flowers provided beautiful flowers, outstanding service and a great value for my wedding on May 17th, 2008 at The Oaks in Royal Oak, MD. Shirley met with my mother and I about 6 months before the wedding and after looking at a few pictures I pulled from magazines, was able to create sample arrangements that were right on target and even more beautiful that what I had showed her. She delivered the samples to my wedding venue to be placed on the tables while my husband and I were there for our tasting. Her prices were very fair. On the day of the wedding she delivered the flowers ahead of schedule and brought extra flowers that we did not order or pay for to help my mother and aunts decorate our Chuppah. She even popped her head in during the reception to make sure we were happy with the flowers. Unreal service! Also, do not be discouraged by the dated photos on the Seasonal Flowers website. They designed very simple modern arrangements for our wedding, which were nothing like the photos on the site.
Julie Hanes provided a yummy, beautiful cake for our wedding at a fair price. She has many different options of cake flavors and fillings and is creative with the design. Julie takes her business seriously, but also has an important job as a mother to young children, so she is not accessible at all times. A few e-mails were not returned for several weeks. Regardless, we were very happy with our wedding cake!
I bought my dream wedding dress - the Avery - on sale for $99 in the summer of 2007 from J. Crew. With a few alterations and a nice pair of shoes, I was ready to go for about $300! Enough said!
David Johnson provide extraordinary service at our wedding on May 17th, 2008. David's approach of playing music through the years created an environment where guests of all ages were able to dance and enjoy the event. He started with oldies and Motown and worked his way to the today's popular music by the second half of the reception. This allowed our older guests to dance early on while they still had the energy, but left time for a full-fledged dance party towards the end of the night. Although David lives and works in Maryland, he traveled into Washington, DC twice to meet my husband and I at a convenient location to discuss our event. I think his hand is permanently attached to his Blackberry because we always got responses with in minutes of sending him an e-mail. The online planning system that MyDeeJay.com uses is a fantastic tool for creating a music playlist and reception schedule. MyDeeJay.com is a "pay for what you get" kind of service - they are not the cheapest DJ's on the block, but if you want an elegant, classy, FUN DJ who knows how to run a wedding - you'd be crazy to hire anyone else.
Wedding Paper Divas Santa Barbara, California 90033
We ordered bright, modern, beautiful invitations at just a fraction of the cost of standard wedding invitations. (Crane's, etc...) The designer at Wedding Paper Divas worked with us on the layout of the text and created a custom spring green background to match the flowers and other elements of our wedding. Well done!
Although the overall score is not a 5, that is only because it is hard to review Blue Nile using these criteria. I was thrilled with my Blue Nile exprience, but it is very much a "self serve" experience. I shopped around my hometown jewelery stores for a wedding band and found exactly what I wanted for more than I was willing to spend. Instead of compromising my dream wedding band, I turned to Blue Nile and found a band for about 1/3rd less than any retail stores were offering it. With the click of my mouse I bought my ring and never looked back. The ring arrived 3 days later and is gorgeous.
