While the best man is the one who holds the rings if your don't have a ring bearer but if you want I don't see why you can't have you MOH hold one and the BM hold the other. I myself am having the BM hold the rings just untill the ceremony and than we will put it on the ring pillows and let each ring bearer hold one ring each.

In almost all weddings at which I have officiated, the best man holds both rings. Typically, the Maid (Matron) of Honor is holding the bridal bouquet, her own bouquet and most likely has no pockets. Of course, I have done ceremonies as you describe, but very, very few.
You don't mention ring bearers but, even when ring bearers walk forward with ring pillows, they are not carrying the real rings. Now sometimes they do. The age of the ring bearers is certainly a factor. But usually, it is the best man who holds them.
Don't forget that the ring bearer has to be standing upfront the entire time until the rings are called for by the officiant. Will your ring bearer (if you have one) be able to stand upfront the entire time?
Bottom Line: If it is just the best man and maid of honor, you can do what you want. Mainly, can the maid of honor comfortably hold the ring until requested by the officiant?
My best to you,
Reverend Stan

we have a cute little box that we glued onto the pillow that will hold the rings until the minister asks for them. Our Ring bearer will be carrying and holding them until then. I got a pillow from the Dollar Tree, jazzed it up with our colors, and hot glued the box onto the pillow. I then added a red rose. It is so adorable!

NOT you adorable 4 yr old ring boy - he holds decoys on a pillow! The best man has pockets, so usually he holds both. However, your MOH can keep it on her pinky finger and pass it to the pastor at the appointed time.

In formal weddings, Rev. Stan is right; the BMan will have pockets and take the responsibility. I did a small wedding today, just immediate family members, but formal (a harpist played) with no attendants. The grandparents witnessed on the license, and both moms held the rings and brought them up. It was a very sweet moment.
