Wedding Cake

I am looking both for recommendations for wedding cake vendors and also to get an idea as to how much it should cost. We are having approx. 150 people and the cake will also be the dessert so it is more important that it taste delicious than look fancy. Also, the reception is in NH so recommedations for vendors in that area are preferred. Thanks!

Hi Mr. Winston, Our cake is 4 layers and feeds around 150. We got each layer a different flavor and it cost $500 including delivery and set up. We are having fondant to give it a smooth look and with the color we wanted it needed to be done in fondant but that is being done for free. The best thing to do is look on the vendors in wedding wire and search for bakers in your area and read their reviews. Its definately best to book soon so that you can get the 2009 prices.

I'm in Texas....we had a 4 tier that fed about 120 and a grooms cake that fed 30. And there was a lot of detail to our cake. It was buttercream, but had some flowers on it made of fondant. The cost for both, and deliver and all that was about $800 I think. I used The Cake Shop.

Wedding cakes can get very expensive so to save money you can easily get a small cheaper cake and sheet cake from Sam's club to keep in the back. Sam's cake is amazingly tasty and incredibly inexpensive.

Well I have a wonderful cake vendor who can do a cake for you that is beautiful but very cost effective. Her name is Dia of Dia's Sweet Surprises she can be reached by email at diamjohnson@aol.com and by phone at 202-487-7617. Just tell her Tomesha sent you.
She also does free tastings.

I'd call a few bakeries around the area you are looking for to see if they do free cake tastings. That way you can see what the cakes they make look like and also (more importantly) taste like.

I HAVE FOUND THAT A LOT OF LOCAL BAKERIES CAN DO A GREAT JOB, MY SISTER USED WALMART AND FOR 375 GUEST HER CAKE WAS 210 DOLLARS. THEY ALSO LET HER TASTE DIFFERENT SAMPLES BEFORE CHOOSING.

Cake is sold by the serving, not by the tier, so know how many people you need to serve when you visit the baker. Avoid being one of those people who dictate "...a 3 tier cake to serve 300" (can't really be done.....need 5 or 6 tiers, depending on the size of tiers).
.
Tell your baker what your budget is and get a realistic budget! Dont' pull a number out of the air. Do some research. (Had a bride who "just decided" she wanted to spend $100 on her wedding cake to feed 300 .... $0.34/serving!! I told her even Walmart couldn't manage that kind of budget!)
.
Definitely schedule a sampling. Bring photos of cakes that you like. Ask if the top tier is counted in the number of servings or if it's designed to be saved for your 1st anniv. (we give a free fresh cake on the 1st anniv!)
.
There's two ways to shop for a cake:
1) You tell me what you can spend and I'll tell you what that gets you. Or ....
2) You tell me what you want and I'll tell you how much it will cost you.

Jacques is delicious, but not cheap. There's also a Bakery in Exeter, it's attached to a breakfast place called Rogans. I haven't tasted theirs, but they're pretty.

Thanks to everyone for responding!
Debi B. - what I would like to tell the baker is that I want to spend $400 at most. I want a simple cake and it needs to feed 150. So far I have had two samplings (at Jacques and at Fredericks) and to be honest I was not overly impressed with either. Overall I would have to say I preferred Frederick's to Jacques but I still didn't love it. These are two well reviewed places so I tend to think that other places will be the same or even less tasty. If that is the case then I want to pay as little as possible for the cake so I can put the $$ towards a more tasty dessert for our guests and have the cake as more of a symbol. Is $400 doable?

Don't assume that just because a place doesn't have as many reviews as another means their product in not as nice. Maybe the less reviewed bakery is new, or just started a website and hasn't had a chance to load all their reviews.
It is hard to say how far $400 will get you because each town has different pricing standards. My cakes start at $2.50/slice, but if I lived in NYC they would start around $7/slice. A high cost of living area means a high price for consumers-same is true for low cost of living areas.
Some vendors offer a discount if paid in full at time of baking. I offer a discounted package deal for the cake if the bride and groom do not have a tasting/consultation, choose an all the same flavor cake and choose from limited designs. Maybe someone in your area will offer something similar.

I was going to do a traditional wedding cake that was 4 tier and it would have been close to $600 but I decided to do floating stands which is the tiers seperated (see my pics) and a very simple design. Because it was so simple and she didnt have to stack them using the rods and what not she charged me the base charge for a birthday cake for each one. I paid $160 before delivery and it tased wonderful. We picked up and extra sheet cake from the grocery store in plain chocolate to make up the difference in servings and gave an alt flavor incase some people didnt like the fillings and stuff in the other one. So much cheaper and looked very nice.
