Up lights
I am wondering if anyone has used uplights or will use uplights at their reception? The place I am getting married said they would be an extra $5 a person, and to me that is a lot to pay for some lights! Is it just me or is this the norm?

That was my reaction... they are lights sit at the bottom of the wall and shine up, usually come in colors like blue, purple, pink... it gives like a dramatic effect to the room. I wanted to give the room an extra pop because it is mostly neutral colors...

Yea, I would ask them why they want to charger you per person. Maybe they think you want the uplights behind the people at the wedding party table??? Maybe you just need to clarify that you want them scattered and not specifically for people. Maybe that will give you a different rate because that just seems odd.

You don't necessarily have to go through your venue for this unless they have some sort of restrictions on it, but actually, that price isn't bad. Look for a lighting designer in your area that can do this for you and compare. (Google tom's river event lighting - it seems like there are several in your area) Prices vary of course on the size of the room and other specialties you are asking for, but most lighting packages come in about the same range as your floral budget. Lighting is huge for creating atmosphere and can really give you a wow factor. Good luck and happy planning!

Per person?, that's a new one on me! LOL

We use up lights for our decor and we use pin spots for our table designs. and its a fee that is a unit price by our lighting guys, not per person!
maybe per table and per unit or wall.

It is a beautiful look and with GOBO designs can be fantastic

I'd ask them if they stated that correctly!

Yea maybe there was a misunderstanding. I will have to double check that. I have been looking at some places online and they all say $14 per light...

Wow! Yea I agree with Flowerfairy, that is unusual for someone to charge lights PER PERSON. To me that sounds like a ripoff.

This might be a possible option -- I have 25 6-inch LED light bases that illuminate centerpieces that I am willing to rent out. They are not really uplights, but will give you a similar effect if you are doing clear glass or really any type of centerpiece.

Talk to your DJ, the one I work with can provide couple's with all kinds of additional lighting (including up lights) at a very minimal charge - yours might be able to do the same.

But a per person charge for lights does seem odd to say the least.

The delivery fee probably includes the set-up. But I agree with some of the others... the pp charge is odd. I'd talk with your DJ & get an estimate from them.

I have had several people I call start to give me a price and then we get to talking and they then say "so it works out to be about an additional $5 per person" I dont know why but a few that I have talked to fell I want to get a per person average. I then run the number with my handy dandy calculator and ask them if $900 is the final price. The last two times I did that they came back with a correction because they calculated wrong.

Many things are done on a pp price, however, when we're talking about lights, it should be more like per square footage of what you are decorating.

Per person? That's extremely odd. Call a lighting designer and rent LED light bars. If they require installing and delivery, I can see a signifigant fee, but some will let you pick up and return yourself (like Hollywood Lighting in Seattle)

hi there.. we are using uplighting at our wedding and it was actually phenomonally (sp?) cheaper to purchase them and the gels than it would have been to rent them. we are then going to sell them on ebay. if you are interested you can send me an email to michi202@aol.com. i will sell them to you at cost plus shipping. we also have amber and red gels as it is a fall wedding. but a per person charge is just odd! lol

ok wow.. just read some more of what you wrote.. i think we paid like 20/30$ per can and the gels were 10 for 2 sheets of each color... definitely cheaper.. and you just plug them into an outlet and there you go. we have 6 of them

Crystal - You can buy the latest LED cans for about $100 each. They burn cooler than the old style cans with the gel sheets and thus are safer if you may have children at your reception. Probably best to speak with your DJ about lighting options.

I have never heard of this before. Our company provides event lighting design and we have a lighting designer walk through the facility with the client (bride, groom, or both). Then, based on the couple's budget, we create a lighting design that accents the room and creates a balanced atmosphere. The lighting is key to bringing everything together - your cakes, flowers, decor, etc. It's the finishing touch. Do not pay for lighting per guest - that's not typical. Call a local event lighting design company and have them provide you with a walk-through and quote.

Hi, LED Up-Lighting comes in many different flavors. To DIYyou can get them set to one color but it gets kind of boring all night. The best look is the ability to set it through dinner to a color or two having them fade slowly from color to color every few minutes then when it come to the dancing portion of the night make them come alive with great interaction and movement having them snap from color to color and chase around the room this is very nice and keeps your reception hopping still keeping that elegant look. A few things to know if you want to do it yourself you will need several lights that can range from $200-$600 for each light for a light that can be set and have enough color to go up the wall in a room the ahs the lights slightly dimed, also you will need a power plug for each light if not you will need an extension cord with multi outlets to daisy chain them around the room. In addition you need special DMX cables to connect the lights to be able to be connected More...
