Spinoff: How much were/are your alterations?

KTizzle, on January 23, 2015 at 1:43 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 30

I'm seeing figures all over the place. How much were you quoted (or how much did you pay) for your alterations? What was the breakdown and where did you go? I'll start:

Bought my dress from David's Bridal, but I took it for alterations to a woman who does it from her home. My FMIL knows her, a few friends have used her, and all have said she is very reasonably priced. Here's the breakdown:

125 for the hem (6 layers of fabric)

50 to make the sweetheart neckline a little more dramatic

50 to press/steam the veil & dress

$225 TOTAL

ETA: I'm in Pittsburgh

Mine will be close to $600. Possibly more. They had to order my dress two sizes too big so that I could get it in in time. Im from Northern Jersey.

I went to Davids Bridal. For letting out the seams in the waist and all the way down, it was $50

My dress hasn't come in, yet, but I budgeted for $600. I chose a dress with alterations in mind. So the bottom tulle is simple, no design that needs to be moved up, and it is a corset back so the sizing doesn't have to be as perfect as it would need to be with a zipper Smiley smile

$185 for taking in the bust, adding a sweetheart neckline, and bustle. This includes steaming. They wanted another $200 to take up the hem, but I just bought really tall shoes.

Mine will be free! FH's grandma is doing them. We could afford to do it, but everyone (including myself) was so scared after a terrible experience with FCIL's dress almost getting ruined by a seamstress that she agreed since there's really only some small alterations.

I got my dress at Kleinfeld, where there's an option to use their alterations service for $675. That's unlimited; if you only need a bustle, it's that price - or if you need 20 visits and basically a new dress, it's that price. I thought that was an insane price, but other brides here from the NYC area tell me that's a pretty good deal, so I'll likely go with them for ease.

It seems like a lot of people have taken the bust in. Has anyone taken the bust out?
