Riviera Maya
My husband and I are looking at going to Mexico again this December. We have been to the Riviera Maya twice this year and although we LOVE the area, our experiences at the two different resorts was extremely different from each other. Once place we ADORED but the other was a disaster. We might stay again at the place we loved but it's one of the more expensive resorts. I'd love to go slightly cheaper if we can but I don't want to make the same mistake as last time and go to a place supposedly 4 stars but with wretched food, service, etc (I even got food poisoning)...they had good reviews on tripadvisor so now I don't know who to trust! So does anyone have suggestions of good resorts in the Riviera Maya area that are cheaper than the Excellence? Maybe the Dreams or Secrets resorts?

Hi Laura,

As you have just found out, it matters where you stay in Mexico. Cheap is not always the best way to go as it will compromise the value of your experience. There is the price of a vacation and the value and they are not remotely the same thing. Think of it as an investment in your experience. No matter how cheap the cost if the food is terrible, you get bed bugs, there's theft, etc., you'd find little value in the experience, therefore, you've wasted the money! This does not mean that you can't vacation and be cost efficient, but you have to be smart about your choices. We have a variety of suppliers that book exclusively in Mexico and we are privy to daily specialis, early bird booking specials, grand opening specials, etc. There is no charge for our services. We are paid directly by the supplier, at no additional cost to you. Why don't you drop me an email and we can dicuss some possible options for you. I am also a Dreams & Secrets Master Agent. Last August my fiance and I went to Playa del carmen and stayed at the Grand Sunset Princess all inclusive Resort. It was sooo beautiful the food was great, the rooms were beautiful and BEST of all we spent a little over $1000!!!
We were actually considering going again.

I have heard really good things about the Palace Resorts (Moon, Sun Palace). I know they are big in the Cancun area, but not sure about the Maya Riviera. I would recommend checking them out.

We are staying at the El Dorado Royale in Riviera Maya. My brother has stayed there in the past and loved it. He said the food is great and the room that you want to book is the swim up casita. We have read nothing but great reviews. I booked it using www.resortcompete.com and got a really good deal. It is an all inclusive resort.

Thanks everyone! I've heard of all those places or drove by them in our trips there. I was looking up prices online and Excellence has great deals right now so it's very exciting that our favorite place seems to be one of the cheapest right now! Guess we'll go with the one we know we love. We have a new snag though so we'll see if we get to go at all. My husband has to request special permission from work if he wants to leave the country, so our going will depend on if they can approve the trip in time. GGRRR!! SO wish me luck! on a side note, I'm really exciting about trying windsurfing for the first time if we do go, has anyone tried this? It's free at the resort. I love outdoor adventure sports and I'm always looking for a new one. It looks like so much fun but I was wondering how hard is it to learn....anyone do it?

Excellence is wonderful and most of the resorts are having sales since the economy is in such a state. But it is the air fare that is going to gouge you. If you plan to go the second week in Dec to the second week in Jan you will pay a premiun and each day that passes the air prices rise so don't wait to long to book.
If you need some suggestions just give me a shout and I'll see what promos are out for the highend resorts with air. Email or call anytime.

thanks! I know how much all the vacation prices sky rocket around the holidays. My birthday is at christmas so we never get to go anywhere for it unless we want to spend a fortune! We're looking at going dec 6-11.....I'm all about a great package deal. I looked up one on bookit.com that seemed decent....think you can get a better deal? I'd be interested in hearing it. I'll email both of you,, thanks so much!
