Residence as a Venue, Parking Issues, larger guest list... Any ideas?

mo0629, on March 19, 2014 at 1:36 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

The venue we want is a residence and the main issue is limited parking and neighbors that might complain. But the back yard is large and beautiful with a view of the river. And our budget is very small, so this is a good deal.

We are trying to cut the guest list down to 50-60, but so far the best I've been able to get it to 75-80. Mostly because my family is a lot larger than the groom's and I have no idea how to cut it down more.

ANY advice about having a wedding at a residence would be appreciated.

Advise all the neighbors that this is going to happen, preferably with a bottle of wine and a nice note (some might be invited if they are close to the owners....) Call the police in the town and ask them what they suggest as far as parking goes. Make sure your music stops at the hour that is legal in the town.

Get a shuttle (party bus, vans, trolley, . . etc) to carry people to the house and back to a hotel or centralized location afterwards. That way you don't have to worry about vehicles all over the place. Also, alert the neighbors of the wedding and that loud music will be turned off by whatever time and you appreciate their understanding. In terms of the guest list - you will always have people who can't go. So if you can't get it all the way down, don't worry because everyone you invite won't be able to come for one reason or another.

Many areas frown greatly if parking is along the road. If you have a place nearby that could let you use the parking lot, and shuttle people to your event...that would probably be the best.

First, talk to the neighbors. Second, check the ordinances in the town. You might not be able to do it according to their rules. There might be liability concerns as well. Third, no parking means needing something like a shuttle to bring people in (think neighbors complaining about bus like vehicles) or a valet (think neighbors complaining about a lot of vehicles being moved and to where?).

Before you go any further, I would check out those things.

I think street parking is fine. They've had events and small weddings there before. But it's the amount of cars parking that might be a problem. I'll definitely look into the party bus thing and informing the neighbors ahead of time.

Be prepared for a disgruntled neighbor to start his lawn mower when he hears "Here Comes the Bride."

    And don't forget porta-potties!

Also suggesting car pooling where possible.

Like Nancy said...my mom always jokes about how "at least there won't be a lawn mower in the church where FH and I are getting married. When my mom married my dad, the neighbor deceded to get out on his riding lawn mower next door. This was in FL in a very redneck area...so a 400lb man was shirtless on his riding lawn mower while my mom was trying to get married 60 feet away. This is exactly why I'm scared of backyard weddings.
