Officiant Tipping
For one of our elopement options, a friend would be able to set us up with the notary at his resort, more than likely for free, but a tip would be a good idea....how much would be customary in this situation?

If it's just a notary I wouldn't think you'd have to tip very much. $20 max in my opinion, but I really don't know what is customary

I understand tipping officiants who offer their services for free or for just a very small $ amount. But is it expected that you tip an officiant that you are paying more money for?

You should tip any notary preparing a wedding. It takes alot of work to write up a ceremony that. I would suggest $125.00. You don't have to tip an officant that you are paying for their service. If you are happy with their service it is nice if you can do it.

I've read that an officiant who offers their services for free should receive $100 tip, but I suppose it depends on where you live, the cost of living, etc. I don't know about a notary

Notary public can only charge a certain limit in most states: http://www.punny.org/money/maximum-notary-fees-by-state-dont-get-ripped-off-by-big-fat-notary-guys/

But you can tip for their trouble whatever you feel they were worth. It they wrote a custom ceremony for you I would give more, but if they just used a standard "fill in the couple's name" pre-written 5 minute service, give less.

I feel that if they are doing it for free you should tip. A co-worker of mine is a notary and she is doing my wedding for free. So I plan on giving her a card w/100 in it. For her to do the ceremony. But you should tip what you feel comfortable giving. Not to say 5 or 10 bucks. But sine the notary works for your friends hotel and they already are getting pd. It will probably be on a day hen they are susposed to be working I would give $50.00. Good luck!!!
