not happy with hair/make up trial? :(

Jessa, on April 10, 2010 at 1:25 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

Had it today. she is an amazing person, SO highly recommended on here and The Knot. i was SO excited! thought my results were just...ok. Smiley sad my eyes are hazel (green/brown) and she did light colors (purples) and i am so used to doing browns/greens that i just wasnt used to it and didnt think it looked great. my hair was pretty from the back but still just ok overall. i dont really know what to do. the actual trial was SO expensive (boston area, dont know if that makes a difference) so having another one with her is kind of out of the question. at this point, so many places are booked and i REALLY counted on her being incredible. i guess im just sad Smiley sad i dont know if i should talk to her about it and tell her i wasnt thrilled? ugh. this just sucks!

Of course it makes sense. We all expect to be a glowing version of how we normally look on our wedding. If you're not used to lavender eyeshadow it probably was a shock to you. I'm sure since she came so highly reccomended she would give you another trial run if you told her you weren't really happy with your results. But if you do decide to try again, don't be afraid to be more vocal. It's your day, and noone knows better than you what will look best. I would give her a call and explain that you weren't quite happy the longer you had to think on it. And next time grab some pictures out of magazines of hair and makeup so she has a clear idea of what it is that you want. Hope it goes better for you!

    Hi Jessica,

Before you decide to go to someone else, give your makeup/hair artist a call and explain your concerns. The colors can easily be changed. A trial is really a time for you to get a sense of the artist's skills and personality. If she is good with the application, then she's good with the application, and it's just a matter of changing things up a bit. Don't feel like you are hurting her feelings by being honest. Hair and makeup are both extremely personal, and I can assure you that she wants you to feel like a bride. I don't think that she would want to lose your business, so again, give her a call and explain yourself. As the pp stated, be vocal about what you want.

    Best wishes!

I think that you should call her and ask to meet again and discuss your concerns. You do not want to spend your whole wedding day feeling uncomfortable with your makeup and your hair.

Please contact her, even if you don't end up using her. I work in a salon, and all of the stylists there want to know how their clients really feel about their hair, etc. How else can they fix their mistakes? I recently spoke to a client who was unhappy with her hair, and when I relayed her concerns to the stylist, she was heartbroken! Apparently the client left with the impression that she loved it. Stylists want you to look good - you're representing them out there. Like pp said, colors are easy to switch up. Was there anything specific a bout the hair you didn't like? Just saying it's "off" won't help the stylist fix it. Does it need more detail in the front? Volume at the top? That sort of thing. Don't feel obligated to use her again, but I'd still at least contact her through email and relay your concerns, she might offer a 2nd trial free or for a discounted fee.

I think email would work just fine. And it will probably give you a better chance to say how you really feel without bumbling around about it (I too hate confrontation so I know how you feel). If she's as amazing as you say that she is, I would just let her know. She'll probably be way more understanding than you think. Just remember... Stay true to who you are! Tell her you like neutrals next time and if she wants to play with color ask her to try maybe a light golden pink to highlight the browns. I'm sure that's why you didn't like your makeup. And your hair, maybe just try another style altogether that you like. Hope it goes better for you this time. Give her a lil email girl Smiley smile

You absolutely need to voice your concerns. I had a nightmare experience on my wedding day with my makeup (different situation than yours). Basically, not only did I not feel pretty, I didn't feel like myself. I look at the pictures and still feel a little upset about that aspect of my wedding. You don't want anything to take away from YOUR day, so do whatever you can to make sure you feel your absolute best.

Did she ask you if you were happy with the results as the session progressed? If she just showed you the finished product at the end and didn't get constant approval from you - then you should kindly ask for another trial run. I always consult with the bride during the entire process to be sure she is liking it as we go - she guides me as I guide her.

You mentioned that you just didn't feel like you looked like a bride as you thought you would. Trust me: You WILL once that gorgeous gown and veil is on! Best advice I can give: When it comes to your makeup and hair it should look quite close to how you would NORMALLY wear it for a lovely evening out - Remember: Your groom wants to see YOU coming down the aisle - not some girl he doesn't recognize! Good luck to you.

Defintely contact her and tell her that you were not satisfied with the look even if you don't end up using her. You want something you're ocmfortable with, and not what she thinks looks great ony ou. Also, at the trial you're usually alotted 2-3 different looks to try. As an MUA she can get a feel of whether or not her client is truly satisfied with her work.

    Good luck!

I would definitely tell her, by email if you are more comfortable with that, your concerns and ask if she would be willing to comp a 2nd trial. But be vocal about what you want or she will just assume you are liking it. When I do a preview I make sure the bride is satisfied with hair & make up before I leave, but if she doesn't speak up I will just assume she likes it. I really appreciate it when my clients are upfront with me about exactly what they want and tell me what they like and do not like. My main goal is to make the bride completely happy with the end result. Most MUAs and HS don't mind redoing the eye make up several times and the hairstyles during the preview to figure out exactly what the bride wants.
