Maui Honeymoon Help!

Kimberly N, on April 16, 2014 at 3:08 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 40

We will be taking our honeymoon in Maui in September. We have friends getting married on 9/19 so we will attend their wedding and make it our honeymoon. The wedding we're attending is in Paia so we will spend 4-5 days there. I'm looking for a second location on Maui for the rest of our trip. I've been looking at the western coast - Lahaina or Kaanapali but really have no idea! Anyone have any advice or past experiences? Good or bad are welcome!

I don't really have any advice but that is going to be one AWESOME trip. I've been to Paris and it is so amazing.. Appreciate and take in the history there. And I'm going to Maui for our honeymoon. We're staying at the Mariott. I cannot wait!! Wish I had already been and could give some insight but good luck

I am staying at the Hyatt regency in Lahianna in September. They have great reviews and it has that place black rock right near by which is supposed to be great for snorkeling.

You can't go wrong anywhere you go. They're basically less than 10 minutes apart and you just take the main road to get to either.

I'd prefer to staying closer to Kaanapali because it felt quieter even with all the tourists. I stayed in the Outrigger Eldorado my first time. For my 2nd I was at Aston at Papakea Resort.

Lahaina has more to do, def drive the road to Hana and stop at every hole in the wall chicken shack, also swimming holes near kaeaenai point and waterfalls on the road to Hana. Bring your own mask and fins for snorkeling they up the price on the islands

Kaanapali is WAY quieter than Lahaina, and the beaches, in my opinion, are better. Lahaina is fun for going out, they have a HUGE bash for Halloween for example that I've been to a couple years, but staying there when you want a relaxing quiet atmosphere is a no go.

Kaanapali is actually part of Lahaina. Its just the built up resort area. I wouldn't really call it quieter though, just different. I think Lindsay is referring to the Front Street area of Lahaina where there there is a long road of shops and restaurants. Further west a few minutes is where you'll find your high-rise hotels. I honestly wouldn't recommend staying in Paia. There are so many other great places you could stay! Its a fairly small island, so driving isn't really an issue. It takes us about 45 mins to get all the way from Napili (west) to Wailea (south). Paia is more of a day trip type of place IMO. If the wedding is a concern for driving, to me it would be worth it to take a cab round trip. It'll be more $$ but you'll get so much more out of your non-wedding days. I'd suggest staying in Wailea or Kihei the first part of your trip, and then moving over to Kaanapali. What sort of nightly budget are you looking at? That will help a lot with guiding you on a good place to stay.

@Heather, the Hyatt is undergoing some major construction so you might want to look into that and see if it will still be going on. If you decide to rebook somewhere else, the Sheraton is directly in front of Black Rock if you think you might change :-)

Lauren, thanks for the heads up. It should be almost complete by the time I go and because I have an ocean view suit it shouldn't really effect my room. However, I really don't plan on spending a ton of time at the hotel anyway (I'm renting a car and want to see everything in the 10 days I'm there).

Thank you! @Lauren I haven't broken it down to a nightly budget but I'd like to keep the overall budget between $5-6k. Flights are $2k so that leaves $3-4k for everything else. I guess that means $300/night is the max. I've seen on TripAdvisor people staying at The Ritz etc but that is not in my budget (I Wish)! I will look into Kihei and Wailea vs. Paia. We'll rent a car so driving to the wedding isn't really an issue although a cab may be smarter.

    I'm here I'm here!

I live in Wailea which is the south side, lots of luxury hotels out here. Kaanapali is the other town with the luxury hotels. Paia is a fun hippy town but definitely not fancy touristy honeymoon-ish. Depends what you're looking for Smiley smile

I have stayed in the Hyatt in Lahaina/Kaanapali and it was amazing! I went snorkeling, zip lining, parasailing and just enjoyed the pool/beach and walking or driving to the nearby shops and restaurants. Lahaina/Kaanapali is definitely the area with more to do/easier to walk to things. If you want a quieter area you could look into Wailea...i.e. Four Seasons or Grand Wailea.

4S or Grand Wailea look amazing but would blow the budget. Because we've been thinking of splitting time in two different parts of the island spending part of it in a less touristy area is totally fine but I also don't want to be bored. FH doesn't love the beach (I could spend all day on the beach) so we'll need access to other activities too.

We are honeymooning on Maui in October. We got a great deal at Honua Kai in Kaanapali on vrbo.com (vacation rental by owner...listing #375968). I enjoy traveling and have had really good luck on vrbo.com. I have been to Maui a few times...it's all beautiful Smiley smile

4 seasons and grand wailea are not super romantic to me- fancy yes, but aimed for kids. i.e.: water slides and kiddie pools at the grand, and only one adult pool at either, you have to get in line at 6AM to get a place at the 4S adult pool (the other one is overrun by kids). No that is not a joke 6AM, we did it, once, never again for that price.

Wailea side: the marriot, andaz are aimed more for adults. the kea lani is the best priced for what you get.

In kaanapali, the marriot ocean club is SUPER nice and the rooms are quite large- would stay there again. the hyatt regency is another fancy hotel over run by children. the royal hawaiian is very nicely priced and the best beach ever is right in front of you. i remember the kaanapali beach hotel being very quiet and in a nice location to walk around
