Less filling vs. taste great???

My venue wants me to pick out the alcohol. To be honest with you.. give me a nice glass of wine over a beer any day. My sweeties doesn't drink at all.. The problem is none of us know ANYTHING about beer. Nothing. NADA. Not a clue. We know we have to have some but to me it all taste horrible. So how do you pick a beer when everything taste bad. I know I should have a more popular brand (Coors, Bud, Michelob.. something..) but then I get to choose 3 special beers... Sam Adams, something called Fat Tire... Amstel... and a bunch of others... if anyone ANYWHERE can help me through this that would be so way great. Thanks to everyone in advance... Jolene in Phoenix

Well I don't like beer but there is a draft amber cider that I really like. It is called Woodchuck Draft Amber Cider. If you could choose that one, it could be a nice alternative to beer. But that's about all I know. Sorry if that isn't much help.

I am not a big beer drinker I prefer Martini's but my fiance is a beer drinker and his regular beer is Bud Lite, but he loves New Castle. The other beer his friends always bring over is Miller Light. The only beer I actually like is called Blue Moon but it's really only good with an orange wedge. That's all I've got, sorry.

From what I know, there are three different "categories" of beer: Lagers, Ales, and "specialty" beers which are just everything else. Within these categories there are different varieties - for instance Ales could be Pale, Red, Brown, Old, Porter/Stout, etc. Try to pick beers from different categories so there is some variety for your guests.
Miller Lite is really popular here but I'm not sure if that's just because we are in WI, where it is made? We also have some really popular local breweries like New Glarus and Pearl Street but they probably aren't available where you are. My point is to see if any of the beers are more local. They wouldn't be something we can help you with, but sometimes they are very popular in your area. (Not always though!! A beer brewed in my town is a local joke.)
If you are totally lost, just ask the venue for suggestions on how to get the most variety to please your guests. They have plenty of experience with this, I'm sure they will be able to help!

If I were you I would go with bud lite. That is a beer that most all beer drinkers can agree on. Miller is a little more bitter and either you like it or you don't. As for your special beers I would go with a sam adams and geniuss (sp?).

Having worked at a banquet facility, I would definitely suggest going with Coors, Fat Tire, and Heineken if that is one of your options. We would have to keep track of our consumption and those were always among the top 5 that most people would choose. Hope this helps you out! :)

Magic hat is an awesome beer if they offer you that brand, and Coronas are always a big crowd pleaser. You should probally pick 2 lighter speciality beers and then one dark one. And if you drink beer all light beer is basically the same. You have a brand you buy all the time but you'll drink whatever. I tend to see bud is more popular but I like miller myself. I wouldn't worry about getting more then one brand of light beer.

EVERYONE I know is a beer drinker, and I work at a resturant that serves beer, so I can pass on some first hand knowledge! I am with you with the wine though, so much better tasting!
The domestic beers that are the most popular where I work and with our circle of friends and family are Bud light, Miller light and Coors. Bud light lime goes over pretty well too. For the specialty beers, the ones we sell the most at work are Heineken and Corona. Also it is a really good idea to have a "beer" like Smirnoff, Mike's Hard Lemonade and Bacardi. They are flavored and will give options who want a beer type drink but don't like the taste. I cannot stand regular beer but will drink one of those anytime!
Hope that helps!

This is what's being served at my wedding (I didn't get to pick, but they probably know from experience....)
Domestic Beer: Sam Adams, Budweiser, Bud Light
Imported Beer: Heineken and Amstel Light
I think Heineken is disgusting, and I don't know anyone that still drinks it, but I guess it's on the top 5 list of most popular. I would change that out if I could.
Also, I find that even non-beer-drinking women (as well as a lot of men) are drinking Bud Light Lime. It was a huge hit at the wedding I was just at on Saturday!
So maybe go with: Bud Light Lime, Sam Adams Lager, Amstel Light, and then something like - Fat Tire, Sierra Nevada or Stella for the pickier beer drinkers!

Another topic that I'm well versed in! I'm a homebrewer and professional beer drinker. ha ha No I like good beers, and don't drink the crap beers (Bud, Lite, Coors, etc.). However, there are plenty of people out there that do love those beers and are the only thing that they will drink.
I assume that Phoenix is still hot in Sept? I would look for a refreshing specialty beer for one selection. Look for a wheat beer, great summer light beer. Another good refreshing beer is an IPA. Would be great to work with a local microbrew for these selections.
Personally I'm a dark beer drinker, but I lean away from the heavier beers in summer (even though shocking to most people - Guinness has less calories and lower alcohol than many light beers).
FWIW, my current favorite brewery is Bells (Oberon being my favorite selection). Every beer that they have out right now is fabulous. Not sure if you get their beer out that way though.

Personally, since neither you or your FH drink beer, you might want to call up some of your guests and wedding party members to find out what they prefer. Regional preferences are very different around the country-- and there are beer "snobs" that only drink certain specialty beers. (My FH & FBIL are very much a beer snobs--they won't drink any of the typical American beers--correction--they'll drink them if that's all ya got, but they'll make fun of you for it lol)...

I am a huge beer lover....(yikes but not an alcoholic) I find it so hard to come to a decision on stuff like this because I hate HATE HATE stuff like coors light, bud, miller light, etc. But I know there are a lot of people who won't drink Smithwicks, or Bass ale, or anchor steam.....so here is my suggestion. Odds are you have at least a few choices. I would say choose a lager.....a bud, bud light, miller light, type.....
Then a midway.....a heinekin, amstel light, stella artois
then an ale.....Bass, Smithwicks, Anchor steam, a Long Trail Pale Ale, something of that variety for those who really love the taste of beer....
Your guests will thank you for it.Good luck!

LOL Anyone got good ideas for some wines? I really don't want Arbour Mist, Might say yes to Boone's though, my FH fave...

As a previous bartender I would say cover your bases... I would go with a regular beer, a light beer, an amber beer, and a heffeweisen (wheat beer)
i.e. Bud, Bud Light, Fat Tire, Blue Moon
