Flower Girl can't throw petals… ?

Victoria and Ralph, on July 28, 2014 at 4:23 PM Posted in Planning 1 26

FH and I are both Catholic, and are having a Catholic ceremony. When we met with our deacon, he dropped a bit of a bomb on us and said the flower girl can't throw flower petals in the church. What can we have her do?

(Mini rant: we're also not allowed to throw rice, bird seed, confetti, flower petals, or blow bubbles outside the church… my mom asked if we're allowed to breathe… UGH!)

I went through all that with my first wedding to my late husband. It really is very frustrating Smiley sad

I see nothing wrong with any of that. Perhaps just have your flower girl carry a basket of flowers. Or a mini bouquet.

Our flower girl is little enough her big brother ("ring bearer") will just be walking her or possibly pulling her in a wagon. I don't think there will be flowers or rings for either of them lol...just a couple cute little kids.

That's pretty common, most venues don't want to get stuck with cleaning it all up. The only thing I think is weird on that list is the bubbles, not like those require cleanup...

    I agree with A&G's suggestions!

Our older flower girls are having flower wands similar to these. Still fun and whimsical but no mess.

I didn't want my Flower Girl to throw anything - so she carried a mini-bouquet. She loved it and it made her feel very grown up.

I married in a church the first time and the FG was so distracted by walking down the aisle, she didn't drop any of the petals in her basket. It won't be a big deal in the end, I love the wand idea above!

My flower girls are also not going to be throwing flowers, but they will have their basket of petals, just no throwing. Otherwise, maybe you can have your girl carry a kissing ball instead or a bouquet like A&G suggested.

I have seen flower girls carry "kissing balls", wands/streamers, small bouquets, signs, etc. in churches instead of throwing anything. Most churches will not allow you to throw or drop anything anymore because of the mess/cleanup. My family church does not allow bubbles either and it is an Episcopal church.

Our place is the same way...I had gotten little owl purses for them to toss flowers out of but I think I will just have them carry them down instead...or maybe blow bubbles (because in our cases they haven't vetoed that yet.)

We had the same restrictions, so our flower girl carried a kissing ball. She was fine with it and looked really cute. Plus, she held the ringbearer's hand so she wouldn't have been able to throw petals.

When my sister was a flower girl for my brother's wedding she handed flowers to people sitting on the aisle. It was cute and different

My niece (FG) is carrying my bear that I have had since childhood. She's not much of a 'basket carrier' or 'petal thrower' so we decided to come up with something that she would actually want to hold. Maybe something like that?

My aisle will already be lined with the flowers I want in a whimsical pattern, so my FG's will be carrying kissing balls.

for your departure from the church, use either sparklers (make sure everyone has a place to throw away the sticks), or release butterflies.

Ew no butterflies that is gross. I have never seen them but I love the wands that were listed above. How old is your FG?
