Do our wedding bands HAVE to match?

Jen, on November 23, 2012 at 10:10 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 30

FH is so set on our bands matching, but his taste is the polar opposite of mine. I have a white gold e-ring with diamonds in the band. I would like a wedding ring with channel-set diamonds in the band. FH wants a two-tone gold band. He's insisting that ours match. FTR: I HATE YELLOW GOLD!

This will be the ONE bone of contention between the two of us. Grrrr......

Match meaning silver & gold? I'd say no... a ring on the left ring finger is a ring on the left ring finger. It means hands off ladies & gents.

You've got some time to change his mindSmiley smile

In some cultures, the bride and grooms wedding bands match. However you don't HAVE to match, and in most cases nowadays they usually don't.

I think the most important part about your wedding band is that it is a ring that you will be happy wearing. Just because you guys are becoming husband and wife, doesn't mean your rings have to match. It isn't going to make you guys any less married to each other. I know you know this already.

Honestly, I'd just let it go for now. You have plenty of time until you need to buy your wedding bands and there is plenty of time for your FH to come around to the idea of nothing having matching rings. I think you'd have trouble finding a yellow band or two-tone band that would complement your e-ring anyway so he may give up on it once he is able to see that when you guys do shop for a ring.

They do not have to match. Some people like them to match, but to most it's the meaning behind the ring that is important. Yes, it may look better in photos on the wedding day but in the long run, I don't honestly think that you will see anyone saying-"Your bands don't match each other's." My FH wants the bands to be the same color of material (mainly because he's a little OCD about the photos) but if we can't find one that matches color that he likes (mine is silver in color) then he will be using my grandfather's ring (which my father and brother also used for their ceremonies, but due to their jobs, they never wear them.)

My FH just wanted them to "match" so that he could get a fancy ring with diamonds, LOL. They don't really match beyond having white gold and diamonds (mine looks vintage, his is a band with black diamonds) but he just wanted an excuse for a flashy ring. (He has a different color of sneakers for, like, every single one of his t-shirts). I don't think they have to match at all. My parents both have plain gold bands and my mom hates it, hehe. You're gonna be wearing this for a LONG time. Get one you LIKE!

DH and I have matching wedding bands. To me, it symbolizes our solidarity, that our individual preferences take a second seat to our mutual union.

Mine was a bridal set and the band was a diamond band so we don't have matching ones, my DH actually has a black tungsten band

No they don't have to match. Mine is mostly white gold with a thin yellow on both edges.

NotFroofy wanted ours to match, and they do. But the vast majority of couples have nonmatching bands.

No they don't have to be matching rings. Sometimes, it's cost effective that way. We on the other hand, are going for custom matching rings to show off our passion and look like wedding rings. Smiley smile In fact, my last ring set wasn't a matching set. It was a Princess styled white gold with 6 little diamonds, two small sapphires and the center diamond. That was the engagement ring. My wedding ring was a simple white gold band with a little groove like it'd be two toned but it's all white gold.

Let me see if I can find something like them, or a camera with a live battery.

We aren't having matching bands. I want diamonds like you do and FH says will not be doing diamonds. just explain to your FH how you feel. and that it wouldn't match your e-ring (I always tell FH just keep the style aspect to me haha)

Hello FutureMrs.O and congrats on your engagement. We just wrote an article about this very topic last month.

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to selecting wedding bands. It boils down to personal preference of the couple. We find with our couples that a great compromise is either getting the same metal or a matching engraved message inside the bands. At the end of the day you both plan to wear these rings for the rest of your life and you both want to love your band and feel comfortable wearing it.

We aren’t going to have matching wedding bands. Mine goes with my engagement ring and we will get something different for him. I haven’t heard of matching bands. Doesn’t seem like a bad idea if both people are happy, but I don’t think it’s a necessity.

My ring and FH's band do not match, AT ALL. Mine is white gold/diamonds, it's a wrap for my e-ring. And his is black tungsten. He was set on a black band and i wasn't about to ruin my e-ring w/that LOL so ours dont match at all but we're both happy, so that's all that matters =)

I don't think they do. FH is getting a Tungsten/stainless steel and I'm getting white gold to match my e-ring

Visually, they might look similar tho because his will have 5 diamond insets and mine will be half eternity.

My fh was the same way until we went to the store. With my ring, the only thing that looks good is a gold band, so we had originally decided that we were going to do matching gold bands- then he found a ring that was absolutely perfect for him so he got that one and I got my gold ring. Ours isn't even the same color, but we're both happy with them. Maybe take him to the store to show him what you want and how rings look with your ering- and then make a decision
