Amy at The Black Tie Company the catering company for our wedding venue, Portland Club was great and helped make our wedding the amazing event we hoped for. They were incredibly professional, the food was amazing, the room looked perfect and the staff took great care of myself, my husband and our guests.
Amy at Black Tie was phenomenal to work with! As soon as we toured the Portland Club with her, I knew it was the perfect spot for our New Years Eve wedding. Our food was spectacular, tables looked perfect, and our guests were more than happy. I still have people raving to me about how helpful the Black Tie staff was -- getting drinks, serving my grandparents so they didn't have to wait in line, decorating -- everything! Amy was especially wonderful - I cannot rave enough about her and Black Tie! I hope that someday soon I have the pleasure of working with her and Black Tie again! An absolutely perfect night, made possible by Black Tie. Thank you!
While the venues managed by Black Tie are beautiful, working with the company was sadly a disappointing experience. As other reviews have mentioned, when we finally received the contract there were hidden fees and surcharges that significantly increased the cost of our catering budget. One of the big selling points of their venue is absence of food/beverage minimums; but, when you tally in all the surcharges, the total comes out comparable if there had been minimums. I could accept this if the service were outstanding, but for the large sum that was charged, the service was lacking. There were discrepancies in how the service actually unfolded and what was stated in the contract and discussed with the event coordinator. A third of the guests at our reception don't drink and we specifically requested non-alcoholic apple cider to be given to them for the toast as well as for them to be offered a non-alcoholic beverage (e.g., soda, seltzer) to drink during the dinner. But during the toast, we realized these guests had nothing. (They toasted with water.) This made us very sad because we specified to the coordinator on at least two occasions and were assured our non-drinking guests would be accommodated during the toast and dinner, but we ultimately felt like their needs were ignored. Overall, the service itself was slow during the presentation of the entree. For the cocktail hour, we ordered only hot hors d'oeuvres, but they were cold by the time served. And after dinner, during our cake cutting, the top tier of our cake almost tipped off because the cake frosting was melting due to the high temperature of the room the cake was being kept in. I'm sorry to write this because the venue was stunning and everyone was so nice at the company, but for the amount of money we spent and for such a small wedding, the lack of attention to detail does not justify the cost that this company charges.
A few words come to mind: fantastic, rock star, saving grace and stress buster. I had the honor to work with Amy for my recent wedding at the Josias River Farm location. Everything was absolutely amazing. Amy took care of anything and everything that I asked of her. I had planned to rope in a friend to set up a few last minute items the day of, but nope! Amy took care of it and with a smile. She was calm and took care of business. I warned her ahead of time that our families can be….. let's just say "a bit much". She, once again, swooped in and had everyone smiling. I would absolutely recommend Amy and The Black Tie Co in a heartbeat. The venue was absolutely stunning and the food was de-lish!!! Thank you thank you thank you for making our big day so amazingly special.
Worked with Sandra at Black Tie to plan our same-sex wedding at Harborview at Jones Landing (separate review for the venue specifically). Can't say enough wonderful things about Sandra. She helped us plan our wedding, our rehearsal dinner AND a welcome party all at Black Tie-managed venues. She was such a help--gave the appropriate amount of advice and suggestions without being pushy or making us feel pressured into doing anything that was too expensive/that we didn't want. She was utterly flexible, meeting with us at multiple times, answering incessant emails, changing numbers and preferences on the day of our event--everything we could ask for. Our venue was beautiful and although we were not able to have Sandra on-site for the entirety of our wedding she was there at the beginning and helped make everything perfect. Would recommend anyone to work with Sandra at Black Tie Co.!
Where to begin? The Black Tie Co. is a true gem. Black Tie provided us with food and bar service for our rehearsal dinner, wedding dinner, cake, and desserts and everything was spectacular. Fresh seafood, local beers, delicious baked goods - just incredible and satisfied our pickiest foodie guests from NYC, Boston and Cape Cod. Sandra was our wedding planner and truly made our day. Above and beyond anything we could have expected. She worked SO hard to make it perfect and was a true wonder woman, providing us with world-class service and putting out fires left and right to make sure we were blissfully unaware of any problems and had the best day of our lives! Would recommend Black Tie to anyone. Amazing experience!
Do not use this catering company! While our contact answered our emails fairly quickly, it was impossible to come to terms on a contract. With each copy of the contract that we received there were extra charges that we did not request and large charges for items that a catering company must own just to do business. When questioned about these fees we were told that these things were non-negotiable and we could take the contract or leave it. We made several attempts to make it work and after being told over and over again that it was a "misunderstanding" on their part and that "most people just sign the contracts without reading them" we had enough! We were treated with nothing but disrespect from beginning to painful end! BEWARE!!!
I worked with Sandra from Black Tie and she was amazing! She was so patient, kind, and organized- she was a pleasure to work with! The food Black Tie put out was out of this world delicious- I got so many compliments from guests! Overall, my wedding was perfect and I attribute a lot of that to Sandra and team for their hard work!
I was very disappointed in the service provided by Blacktie. Due to a tight planning schedule, we were stuck with them because they had exclusive rights to all the venues that were still available. Concerns included but were not limited to:
1) Amy, our contact person, was very unresponsive. It would take several weeks to hear back about questions. As a bride planning from out of town, this was very stressful. When we called, she was always "just stepping into a meeting."
2) The contract felt like a bait and switch. Despite telling them in January that we were doing a cocktail hour on a ferry with dinner on an island and receiving a proposed contract, they told us in SEPTEMBER (one month before the wedding) that they were now considering this itinerary two separate events. This essentially doubled all non-food costs
3) The food had something to be desired. The head table didn't have sauce on its entrees (!!!!) and the salad was EXACTLY the opposite of what we wanted. Since we were doing a shooter of chowder in the salad course, we just wanted mixed greens with a vinaigrette. We specifically said we didn't want the typical garden salad (ie grape tomatoes, red onion, grated carrot). Grape tomatoes, red onion, and grated carrot were all served.
4) Despite doing family style, they took a long time to serve between the salad course and entree, which set our whole day behind. Luckily we had an amazing wedding planner (not the one offered by Blacktie, someone we hired independently) to get us back on track
Would not recommend. Over priced, shady contract, lack luster meal.
Our wedding planner, Amy did an excellent job of putting together a plan that would accommodate our requests. Black Tie Company has some really lovely venues in the Portland area. We chose Camp Hammond because it was both beautiful and very affordable. It also had indoor and outdoor space. While what we wanted most was an outdoor wedding and reception, it was comforting knowing that had there been rain, we would have had an indoor option. I highly recommend using Black Tie's baker for your wedding cake or cupcakes; our Lemon wedding cake (lemon cake, lemon curd, and lemon buttercream frosting) was out of this world.
The Black Tie Company helped coordinate, organize, plan, and cater our wedding at the Portland Club, and we were lucky to have them! The space was beautiful, the staff was incredibly helpful in the planning stages and the day of, and we were well taken care of during the ceremony and reception by the Black Tie staff. The food at cocktail hour was delightful (go for the Chef's Table option! It's very unique, and a great spread) and our plated duet dinner was presented artfully and tasted terrific. Black Tie's baker also made our cupcakes and our tasting cake, and everything got rave reviews from us and our guests. They were worth every dollar for the service, food, and friendliness in working with us for our own unique wedding!
Camille and the Black Tie Company did a fantastic job in ensuring our wedding came together smoothly! Planning a wedding long distance isn't the easiest of tasks, but Camille and her staff did a great job of making sure my husband and I were 100% pleased with the menu, decor, staff, etc. The food was absolutely incredible and exceeded expectations (food was a big part of the night for us and we both had high standards for the cocktail hour and dinner). Additionally, the decor for the reception turned out even better than I could have imagined! As the summer season got busy, there was a bit of delayed response in ensuring that last minute questions were answered and we received our final contract a bit closer to the wedding date than I would have preferred, however any last minute changes my husband and I wanted were addressed promptly and everything turned out spectacular! We couldn't have been more pleased on our wedding day!
Small parties beware!
We used Black Tie to cater our reception based on their reputation for making excellent food. They did not disappoint on that front, but during the planning process our coordinater, Camille, bascially stopped responding to our emails and telephone calls. When we asked why, we were told that it was because we were a small party (about 60 people) - even though we had already paid all of the deposits. It got so bad that we did not get a finalized menu until 4 days before the actual wedding, despite having been asking for it for the previous 6 months. Email requests for confirmation of particular details also went unanswered for 3 or 4 weeks. As a bride, it was extremely stressful to have these things left up in the air until literally right before the wedding. At one point we were even planning a back-up barbeque, just in case. This is not the type of service we expected from a company with such a top-notch reputation.
The actual wedding turned out to be fine in the end, with the staff very helpful and professional and the food excellent. But if we had it to do over again we would go with someone who would actually respond to us. Or at least insist on a different coordinator.
My husband and I recently got married and had our reception at their Portland Club venue. It was perfect! We had 140 guests, but still wanted a cozy and intimate space. It was exactly what we wanted. It felt as though we had the chance to all get together in someones beautiful big old home. Amy Collins was who we used to plan everything through. She was EXCELLENT! Always on top of her game and a pleasure to work with. Even on the day of the wedding she was more than willing to move the cocktail hour back a bit so the bridal party could enjoy some of it after doing photos. Afterwords, we all went up into their antique billiards room for the after party where we had grilled cheese and tomato soup (a signature meal of my husband and I) at hand for late night partying :) Highly recommended.
I was married on August 28th on Peaks Island, and food was one top priority for our wedding – Black Tie did not disappoint! All of the food has to be transported from Portland out to Peaks Island, which made me a little bit nervous, but everything was amazing – both in taste and preparation. Their staff is also top notch, they made sure that our guests were happy throughout the evening, and if they saw someone had a need, they stepped right in to help.
During our cocktail hour, both hot and cold butler passed hors d’oeuvres were served, as well as a full stationary display. My favorites were the lobster bundles and the grilled pear with Roquefort on a baguette.
We then served a plated, 4 course dinner to approx. 60 guests, with a poured wine service:
•First Course: a chilled melon-berry soup (amazing presentation!)
•Second Course: a salad of baby spinach, figs, and bacon
•Third Course: choice between crab cakes and a Carpaccio with lemon olive oil
•Fourth Course: choice between roasted butternut squash ravioli and spicy puttanesca sauce over orchiette pasta
•Dessert: chocolate and red velvet cupcakes, topped with edible flowers
Paula was our coordinator, and she was wonderful to work with. She responded promptly to all e mails and requests (including the addition of a guest late Friday night just before the wedding!). Much more than “just” a caterer, Black Tie also assists with your total event set up, and really guides you through the wedding planning process.
I would highly, highly recommend Black Tie Catering to any bride who loves truly great food and service.
We had our reception at the Portland Club, catered by Black Tie Co. Part of the package deals that the Black Tie Co. has includes a day-of-coordinator.
The Portland Club was the perfect backdrop for our reception. The house is gorgeous with plenty of side rooms for your guests to explore - the bar, the living room (appetizers) and the front room (which we used as a child's room). The food was delicious and the staff was very flexible and accommodating with the menu options. They seem to love to try new things.
Paula, our event coordinator, also loved to research options and find menu items, decor, cake pictures, etc. that fit with our vision. She found the most decadent vegetarian torte with whipped goat cheese that, together with chef Jason, they made come to life. It was delicious!
Paula was very quick to reply whenever I had a question. If she didn't reach me by phone, she always left very detailed messages or sent an email to ensure I had my answers as quickly as possible.
The reception decor was beautiful when we arrived! I had a lot of extra favors and left a note that they could be used as additional decoration throughout the venue, if they saw fit. They did an amazing job of using the favors as little accents on the cake stand, the guest table and a couple of other places. It was such a nice touch and better than what I envisioned. They also add many candles, at no extra cost, to the entire venue, which really adds a nice, romantic touch to the entire scene.
