*VERY DISAPPOINTING*
Ann has the equipment but does not know how to use it.
She never told me that I would be her first wedding, and was EXTREMELY disappointed in her abilities. I looked at her galleries, and thinking, after seeing a few ladies in wedding dresses that she had taken photos at weddings before, but no- never had. I was not looking for someone to use me as a test run, for I am VERY particular when it comes to photography. (Once aspiring to be a photographer myself) She claims to specialize in candid photography- which I, being naive, had believed her.
She started off the process very professional, having appropriate forms for me to sign and handling phone conversations very well. Unfortunately I was in Texas, trying to find a photographer for back home in Iowa and never got to meet her until 2 weeks before the wedding. She lacks in self presentation/ cleanliness and professional ways to behave in a business situation.
The majority of my photos I received back were out of focus and yellow tinted. I know that color can be altered to make look better, but there is nothing that can be done to the vast majority of photos that were returned very out of focus. You can't "focus" a picture after it has been taken.
She seemed to not care whether she caught the special moments because she wasn't able to catch people smiling with her "candid skills." I don't understand how my Husband's Grandpa was able to catch EVERY member of the bridal party in
FOCUS and SMILING as they WALKED down the aisle and she, being my paid photographer, was not. BLOWS MY MIND.
She missed the tossing of the bouquet and guarder. Two VERY IMPORTANT action shots that were so blurry, it made me sick.
She proved to me only a few photos that were actually in focus and with good coloring. Unfortunately they were few and, that really doesn't impress me.
As for the group shots, she kept asking ME what pose I wanted to do next. SHE is the photographer, and we had already written down all the arrangements I wanted to see ahead of time, on paper so I wouldn't be confused on which people's picture we needed to take next. Overall, poor work, lack of creativity, unprofessional appearance, and little proof of candid/ action shot abilities.
Considering the majority of our event would be the reception, I was really looking for someone who was capable of quality action shots. What she proved to me was not even average/ acceptable work.

Recommended for STILL SHOTS ONLY (posing, studio, holding still etc)
- HELGENS WEDDING, 2010
Ideal Portraits, LLC responded with the following comments:
I certainly don't wish to invalidate any opinions this client may have about my services, but this is unfortunately inaccurate information. I informed her before she signed the contract that due to the fact that she was getting married in the winter and weddings were a new service of mine, she would in fact be my first wedding. That is the sole reason she received over an 80% discount on my standard price. In point of fact, I actually took a financial loss photographing her wedding. It was again discussed when we met for a consultation before the wedding that I had been practicing photographing movement in low light situations in preparation for my first wedding which would be hers and offered to show her those images.
This client breached her contract in several ways which I neglected to enforce out of courtesy for the fact that it was my first wedding and she seemed like a very nice person. This includes not paying the sales tax causing me to have to readjust the cost to compensate for it and having other photographers taking pictures throughout the process with their flashes going off (including during the group posed shots). Many of the smiling and clear shots I captured were unable to be used due to outside flash interference blowing out the image and sometimes causing blur. This is something I specifically discussed with her due to the large number of photographer friends and family members she had said would be at the wedding.
I missed the shot of the bouqet being caught because the young lady that caught it came crashing into me. I snapped the picture while ducking out of the way, and I showed her the image simply so she knew what happened. I also did capture the garter removal, but the toss literally took 2 seconds and unfortunately I did miss it.
This client was also informed that I'd had an equipment malfunction with my flash that evening due to the extreme sub zero cold outside. Had I NOT known how to use my camera and adjust the settings appropriately she would have had completely black images or simply none at all. My ability to adjust on the fly is what saved it. Yes, some pictures during the dance portion of the reception had some blur and a fluorescent tint due to this malfunction and the lights being off, but I addressed that to her during the editing process. During that time I also consulted other professional photographers who said they would have handled it the same way and who having seen my images thought I did well.
This client proofed all of the images in an online proof gallery before the final discs were burned and sent to her, and I insisted several times that she inform me of any changes in color balance, enhancements, or other things she would like to have done. I was told they looked fine and that she didn't want any changes. She received her pictures in the very beginning of February, and now being mid April is the very first time I've heard of any discontent from her.
This wedding is part of my portfolio, and any potential client who would like to view these photographs is encouraged to request to see them at any time. I have nothing to hide. I do in fact care very much that I missed any images at all having taken over 1500 to begin with. The entire reason I wanted to photograph weddings is because I'm a sucker for a love story and greatly appreciate being a part of something so special. I photographed at her wedding for over 13 hours with only 1 break to make sure I didn't miss anything for her, and I'm sorry she was unsatisfied with the action shots. However, I'm glad to hear that she was happy with the stills as there were very many of them.
