Joshua and Christopher were married in a ceremony at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial followed by a reception at Woodend Sanctuary in Washington, D.C. and Chevy Chase, Md. on June 21. “There was no other choice of site,” Joshua said. “Being able to get married in our nation’s capital at our favorite monuement, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, meant the world to us. What really made the venue perfect for us was how the house and surrounding grounds flowed together. The simple and natural feel of it all spoke to us.” The grooms wore different custom-made three-piece suits with floral patterned ties. One wore a navy blue, while the other one wore tan. “We loved them,” he said. “Everything from the beautiful lining to the distinctive buttons and lapel pins made the suits stunning. They fit us perfectly, and we felt like a million bucks.” Guests, approximately 145, sat in white folding padded chairs organized in a half-circle to witness the exchanging of vows before it was official! “Walking down the grand staircase and being announced to our family and friends while they cheered for us was just the most surreal, wonderful moment,” Joshua said. “It felt great to shake off the formalities of the day, greet everyone, and thank them for being there to celebrate with us.” Cocktail hour began on the 40-acre property that dates back to 1699. Fun fact: It was designed by architect, John Russell Pope. “We were just tickled with the food,” he said. “The hors d’oeuvres were so unique and tasty! There were smoked trout puffs, onion tartlets, and sausages wrapped in pastries to name a few. Laura did such a great job of finding Finnish foods.” Tables were decorated with white linens and napkins, moss centerpieces and numbers, lanterns, and koozies, which served double-duty as favors, at each place setting. “There was no specific color scheme,” Joshua said. “We just wanted to have the feel of blues, purples, and pinks of the wildflowers. Our florist, Suzann, embraced our theme when we first spoke with her. Her vision and enthusiasm brought everything into harmony, making it feel as if we were celebrating our midsummer wedding in Finland.” A two-tiered buttercream-frosted cake was cut and served for dessert. In lieu of a traditional guest book, locks were placed onto a wire window panel. The newlyweds’ best advice? “Break in your shoes, but really the best advice that we received and that we want to pass on is to enjoy planning together — every bit of it,” he said. “It took us eight months to plan a wedding that lasted a fleeting three days. We made so many memories getting to know our vendors, exploring ideas, and playing off each others’ strengths to come up with an amazing weekend. Your wedding is just one perfect day, but your time planning is an adventure.”
Erica and Michael were married at Thomas Fogarty Winery in Woodside, Calif. on May 3. “It’s spectacular views had particular significance for us because we could see Stanford’s campus, where we first met,” Erica said. The bride wore a v-neck lace fit ‘n’ flare wedding gown, accessorized with her hair in an updo, ivory sash, and a pair of Jimmy Choo peep-toe high heels, while the groom wore a black suit, accessorized with a tie. Bridesmaids wore short pink chiffon dresses and carried bouquets of roses, peonies, Queen Anne’s lace, freesias, and green trick dianthus. “My grandmother wore a lucky dime in her shoe on her wedding day in 1948,” she said. “I kept this dime in a tiny box with the inscription, ‘something borrowed, something blue, and a piece of silver in your shoe.’ In keeping with the tradition, my mom wore this same dime in her shoe when she was married. She kept this dime in a vintage box for years, hoping that one day, I would be able to wear it as well.” Guests were greeted with cucumber ginger sprtizers to beat the spring heat. “Our ceremony was held at a hilltop overlooking the Bay Area, and we were fortunate to have amazing weather with a clear scene stretching from San Francisco to Palo Alto,” Erica said. “Walking down the aisle, seeing our family and friends, and listening to a very personal processional recorded and arranged by Michael, was a moment we will never forget.” Once the vows were sealed with a kiss underneath an arch, it was official! Cocktail hour began with none other than hors d’ouevres such as cheese. The reception took place underneath the pavilion. Tables were decorated with white linens, sage green napkins, mercury glass centerpieces, and votive candles. Bonus: freshly-baked loaves of bread and olive oils. “Even my dad toasted about how he never thought anyone could love his daughter as much as he did, until Michael came along,” she said. “And watching a tear form in many of the other dad’s eyes in the audience.” After dinner, a mini cake was cut, but not served because there was an assortment of cupcakes instead. The dance floor was packed until the end of the night. “We wavede goodbye to everyone with Tony Bennett’s, ‘I Left My Heart in San Francscio,’ playing in the background,” Erica said. The newlyweds’ best advice? “Get a great wedding planner!” she said.
Katie and Kyle were married at Keystone Resort’s Timber Ridge Lodge in Ouray. Col. on July 5. The bride wore a strapless a-line wedding gown with a lace bodice and tiered, ruffled skirt, accessorized with a fingertip-length veil and an ivory sash, while the groom wore a light gray suit, accessorized with a bow tie. Notice they both are wearing Converse tennis shoes? Bridesmaids wore short yellow chiffon dresses in various necklines and carried bouquets of roses, dahlias, daisies, craspedia balls, ferns, and succulents. “It had poured the day before the wedding, and rained the day after, but not on July 5th,” Nicholas Lyon of Nick in the Wall Photography wrote on his blog. “Not sure if it was luck or if someone was caring some good karma that day. I can’t complain either way. It took two twenty-minute gondola rides just to get up to the venue. Somewhow everyone showed up on time, everything ran on time, and just about everyone at the wedding cried.” The ceremony took place outside on the deck, overlooking the Gore and Ten Mile Ranges, with a unity candle lighting to symbolize the joining of two families into one. During the reception, guests enjoyed keeping cozy next to the two-story fireplace underneath the cathedral ceilings. Tables were decorated with chevron runners atop white linens, tall blossoming branch centerpieces dripping with glass orbs, wooden logs and pine cones, and votive candles. After dinner, dancing, and a few drinks, the three-tiered square cake, topped with an exact figurine replica along with a dog and cat too, was cut and not smashed into anyone’s face. A photo booth with props of all kinds provided extra entertainment, and if that wasn’t enough, there was also s’mores kits to roast, which served double-duty as favors. At the end of the night, the newlyweds exited amongst a sea of sparklers.
McKenna and Joseph were married at Silverleaf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. on May 3. “It was gorgeous!” McKenna said. “It reminded us of a Tuscan villa.” The bride wore a strapless satin mermaid wedding gown, accessorized with her hair down in loose curls with a chapel-length veil, while the groom wore a black suit, accessorized with a bow tie. Bridesmaids wore long black chiffon dresses with halter necklines and carried bouquets of peonies, hydrangeas, and orchids. The ceremony was held outside overlooking the canyons of the McDowell Mountains. “Holding Joseph’s hands when I met him at the altar [was the moment in my wedding I can’t stop thinking about],” she said. “I was so happy and excited to call him my husband.” Guests were greeted into the courtyard with a fountain originially from the borders of France and Spain! “It was most likely used as a functional source of drinking water for villagers,” according to The Silverleaf Club’s website. Tables were decorated with white linens, floating vase centerpieces, and a wine bottle, which served double-duty as a favor, at each place setting, surrounded by chiavari chairs. The newlyweds’ best advice? “Patience,” McKenna said. “Try to get as much done early on. Erin and Robert were married in a traditional church ceremony at Yosemite Chapel followed by a reception at Yosemite Lodge at the Falls in Yosemite Valley, Calif. on September 21. The bride wore a strapless satin a-line wedding dress, accessorized with a collared, capped-sleeved bolero, while the groom wore a black suit, accessorized with a white vest and tie. Notice the pine cone boutonniere? Bridesmaids wore mix ‘n’ matched long neutral chiffon dresses and carried bouquets of mums wrapped in ribbon. Following the intimate nuptials, portraits were taken around the park just before Mother Nature let down rain, thunder, and lightning, but the skies were oh-so dramatic! The reception followed inside the Moutain Room Restaurant and Lounge, decorated with cylinder vases filled with pillar candles and evergreens atop wood slices. Guests found their seats via a handwritten chalkboard sign, devoured an organic and sustainable, buffet dinner, and sweetened up with a three-tiered buttercream-frosted cake. The newlyweds danced the night away and then jetted off to their honeymoon for two weeks afterwards.
