Preppy Green Lakeside Summer Wedding in Minnesota

Lisa and Chuck were married at the bride’s parents backyard in Lake Minnetonka, Minn. on June 29. “We got married lakeside in the yard of my childhood home,” Lisa said. “My parents moved into the house a few months before I was born, and I lived there all my life. Chuck, too, fell for the charms of Lake Minnetonka over years of visits, and the one thing that we knew when we got engaged was that there was no other place we would rather start our next chapter together.” The bride wore a custom-made and -designed wedding gown with a hi-lo hemline in the front and a cowl back, accessorized with a her hair down in loose curls, while the groom wore a dark gray suit, accessorized with a bow tie. Bridesmaids wore white blouses with striped skirts and carried bouquets of almost all greenery. “Chuck and I wrote our entire wedding ceremony ourselves,” she said. “We chose two very special readings: an excerpt from our favorite book ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’ as well as the E.E. Cummings poem ‘I Carry Your Heart With Me.'” Even their five-year-old English labrador retriever, Tucker, was the ring bearer! Following the sincere nuptials, the newlyweds grabbed a glass of champagne, hopped on a boat, and cruised away from the crowd to celebrate with smooches for a bit. Guests were escorted into the reception tent draped in fabric with compasses, which directed them to “island” tables. In addition to the three-tiered buttercream cake, pecan pie was also served. For entertainment? A band and abstract painter! Plus, homemade truffles were wrapped up in boxes to take home as “bon voyage” favors.

Briana and Paul were married at the Calhoun Beach Club in Minneapolis, Minn. on May 24. The bride walked down the candlelit aisle wearing a sweetheart ruffled mermaid wedding gown, accessorized with drop pearl earrings, a cathedral veil, and gold glitter peep-toe pumps, while the groom stood patiently waiting wearing a black tuxedo, accessorized with white cufflinks. We love her peony bouquet! Programs included a pink chevron pattern, which was used throughout stationery, including the invitations and table numbers. Following the intimate ceremony, 75 guests enjoyed sipping on “cosmo-‘paul’-itans” and “‘bri’-linis” — the newlywed’s signature drinks! Reception tables were decorated with ivory linens and rose and hydrangea centerpieces, and the cake featured two little birds on top. Who was the first person to cut-lose on the dance floor? Grandma!

Q & A with the Bride:

Which details from your wedding were your favorites?

The flowers were so elegant. Our main color was eggplant, but we wanted to stay classy by incorporating just the right amount of color. All of our centerpieces contained a lot of whites, creams and greens with just the right amount of eggplant color.

The ruched chair covers we went with. I thought they gave a different feel to the room then the standard “bag” style.

If you could offer one piece of advice for other couples planning their wedding, what would it be?

Keep calm and enjoy the day. The days and weeks leading up to the event are busy and stressful. This day happens once in your life and just make sure you enjoy the day and don’t stress about the little things that may not go as planned. Also, this is the couple’s day, but so much of it is spent apart, talking and visiting with guests. Make sure to find some time to sneak away for a few minutes and take in the special day by yourselves.

Give us the one moment in your wedding day you can’t stop thinking about.

Right before our ceremony was to begin, as guests were coming in, it began to downpour outside. The skies were as dark as can be and the rain was coming down in sheets. As my Dad and I were walking down the aisle the sun started to break through the clouds. By the time our ceremony was over – 18 minutes later – the sun was shinning and the rain was gone. The reason this was so special was not only because the sun started to shine while my Dad and I were walking down the aisle, but because the song we chose to be our recessional song, months ago, was “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles. People were talking about this the rest of the night, and it is something we will remember and be able to talk about for many years.

Q & A with the Bride:

1. What was the one thing about your venue that made you know it was the one?

We wanted a unique space for both our ceremony and reception. The Depot Minneapolis is actually part of the original Milwaukee Railroad Depot that was built in 1899. It was historic and classy and fit our formal wedding perfectly.

The space is so beautiful that it really didn’t require much transformation. We were able to have our guests escorted out of the ceremony space after the ceremony with butler-passed champagne, and 15 minutes later, cocktail hour began in the flipped space. An hour later, our guests walked through the three sets of double doors that led to the Great Hall where we had our reception. The fact that the reception space opened up to our ceremony space sealed the deal for us, as we knew it would be a seamless transition for all of our guests (especially convenient for all of our out-of-town guests, staying at the adjoining hotels).

Oh, and The Depot staff allowed our boxer (and my maid of honor), Mali, to be a part of our ceremony. We weren’t saying “I do” without our fur baby there!

2. Which three details from your wedding were your favorite?

1. Food-It’s a passion we share, so we wanted to incorporate that theme throughout our day.

2. Wine ceremony-We placed notes to each other in a box, alongside a bottle of wine to be opened on our first anniversary.

3. Father-daughter dance to “Hang on Sloopy,” a true, Buckeye tradition, that is sung at all Ohio State sporting events. My parents are alumni.

3. Give us the one moment from your wedding you can’t stop thinking about. 

Because of the way we timed the reception, our entire band had not yet arrived in time for our first dance, so we couldn’t dance to the live version of “You Are The Best Thing,” by Ray LaMontagne. I was fine with that, as we wanted to get everyone on the dance floor as soon as dinner and the speeches were over. Much to our surprise, toward the end of the night, our band asked all of our guests to make a giant circle around us. They began playing our first dance song. We were overwhelmed by being surrounded by all of the people that brought us to that day. We felt so incredibly loved at that moment (even though be broke into the sprinkler during the song to make everyone laugh). It was such a special moment, and we have no pictures of it, so the memory is all we’ve got!

Q & A with the Bride:

What was the one thing about your venue that made you know it was the one?

The reason we knew it was our venue immediately was because our first date was actually at the Varsity Theater. So really it was a no brainier for us.

Which three details from your wedding were your favorites?

I loved the fact that we got to pick a personal message to have up on the marquee at the Varsity. When Ben proposed the song “Love Story” by Taylor Swift happened to be playing so it seemed  to be fitting to have it say “A Love Story Starring Ben and Alison” 

One of the other cool things the Loring Pasta Bar and Varsity Theater offered was signature cocktails. We got to come in and have a really fun day of tastings and concocting different drinks until we found two we really enjoyed! 

And of course our fantastic photographer. She truly captured the day and you can see that if you flip through her photos  of the day some of our family who were unable to attend said they really felt like they were there just by looking at them! 

Give us the one moment in your wedding day you can’t stop thinking about.

Honestly one of the best moments was when I was tossing my bouquet and the girls…there is no other word for it but they went insane. A full dog pile complete with wrestling occurred after I did the toss. It was so great!
