About Us
Taproot is located in an elegant and private setting with a beautiful, unobstructed view of the Blue Ridge Mountain. You can't go wrong with this site for a memorable and stunning horse country wedding. This historic setting boasts spectacular sunsets and rolling green meadow views. Horses grazing in the Middleburg country-side complete the perfect mood for your wedding. Privacy is also complete in this setting as the wedding site is 1/2 mile from the public road. Taproot is an example of a federal mansion designed in the Palladian mode. It is a replica of the historic Hope Plantation in Winsor, North Carolina, a grand manor house built by David Stone, Governor of North Carolina and a US Senator. Enjoy walking through the gardens and ancient English boxwood. Enjoy cocktails on the lawn or around the pool area. You and your guests will go back in time. There is ample parking, lots of flat ground for a small or large tent(s), a perfect long, stone driveway for carriages to deliver the bride and wedding party if you choose*; ceremony may be on the elevated front porch so that everyone can see the bride and groom or under a decorated arch with the mountain in the background or around the boxwood circle. We can also provide several elegant bedrooms with private bathrooms for the wedding party and parents of the bride and groom to get ready in. Taproot is located in the Unison Battlefield district recently nominated to both state and national historic registers. The Unison Battlefield district will commemorate the 1862 Battle of Unison, a Civil War battlefield which President Lincoln himself planned and hoped might bring an early end to the Civil War. The area surrounding Taproot is a special place where the historic roads and the farms are beautifully preserved and appear as they did hundreds of years ago. “The Unison Battlefield and the countryside around it… the topography, roads, view shed are still intact. It is unimpaired by shopping centers, towers, the noise and lights and visual intrusion that can mar and make it difficult to see and read an historic landscape.” Kristen McMasters, American Battlefield Protection Program (National Park Service). “Those who fought in 1862, could they stand here again, would recognize their battlefield today.” David Lowe, historian and cartographer, National Park Service author of “The Battle of Unison, November 1-3, 1862. *We have a large barn area for staging carriages and horse teams.
