Tips and Advice

Selecting a Band for Your Wedding Reception
By Richard Tatgenhorst

How do you select a band for your wedding reception? You have a very difficult job ahead of you. There are so many bands that say they are the best around, and their picture and demo look and sound great! How do you know you are getting what you see and hear? it is going to take you some time, but hopefully this article will help you in your decision making process.

As a musician myself and someone who has been in the entertainment booking business for over 20 years I have a unique perspective on selecting the best band for your reception. Knowledge is key. How do you gain knowledge about a band? Ask lots of questions; are the same people in the picture and on the demo still in the band? Ask the facility and other vendors if they have heard of the band you are considering and if they had heard of any problems. I find out what groups are really like from catering managers. They see bands come and go and have to deal with their little wims and complaints! Here are a few helpful questions;

What time do you get to the facility to set up?
How long are your sets and breaks? (sets should be 45 minutes to an hour long, and breaks should be no longer than 15 to 20 minutes)
What kind of recorded music do you play during the band breaks?
Is there someone available to make announcements and be the master of ceremonies?
Will you learn special requests?
Can you go and see their set up before or during a wedding reception?
(Does the stage look nice, or is the equipment beat up and wires strewn everywhere?)
What size stage does the band need?
What are the band power requirements?
Do you bring your own lighting system?

The most successful bands not only have a great repertoire and great musicianship, but have great personality and audience interaction. If you are able to visit another event that your potential band is performing it is essential to consider the acoustics of that particular hall they are performing in. The more fabric or carpet that is in the event facility the better the band will sound! Hard surfaces bounce the sound back and forth and tend to be very noisy.

When you finally decide on the band tell them what your expectations are; the songs you wish to have performed, and more importantly the songs you do not want to hear-- even if they are requested by a guest. Make sure you get everything in writing. If something unfortunate does happen at your reception tell your best friend or someone you trust with your life to take care of it! Your day is too important to be dealing with such problems. All of your friends and family want you to be the happiest person on earth. So delegate on your most special day, don’t sweat the small stuff, and take care of problems when you get back from your honeymoon. Then you can say “I have this all in writing!”
