About
At Ideal Portraits, we promise to provide you with the highest quality portraits, prices you can afford, and top notch customer service tailored to your individual needs.  Our passion is photography, not getting rich.  So when we set our pricing, we made ourselves affordable while still providing more options like free retouching and enhancements every day.

"There's no one 'style' that is right for everyone, no one pose that fits a situation every time. That's where timing, instinct, consistency and the understanding that every part of a photograph has a reason to exist come into play. Clarity and understanding separate the wedding photographer from the snapshooter and are why couples still hire professionals to photograph their weddings. Modern cameras available to anyone with the right budget can make photography a much easier task than it was in the past. The wedding photographer's eye, instincts and attention to detail make the difference." ~ George Schaub

Couples have always been some of our favorite people to photograph, because capturing that connection is priceless. Since that is what your wedding is all about, we worked very hard to get to the point where we knew 110% that we could meet and exceed not only your expectations, but our own, when photographing a wedding.

Our philosophy about weddings is simple ~ we absolutely do not want to add any more stress to the bride than she already has!  Just focus on your future together... We will concretely establish your expectations and preferences, be at the rehearsal dinner to prepare ourselves ahead of time, and then capture your wedding memories in a classy and unintrusive way.  We also travel, and we'll even help you out finishing the decorating at the rehearsal if you need a hand.

Please don't hesitate to contact us with questions or if you would like to set up a free consultation!

Frequently Asked Questions for Photography
What primary photographic style do you identify with?
Contemporary, Photojournalism, Portraiture, Traditional / Posed

What do your packages include?
Albums, Custom Graphic Design, Digital Files, Flush Mount, High Resolution Images, Prints, Proof CD of All Images

Do you have liability insurance?
Yes

Do you offer special techniques such as hand-coloring or toning?
I offer enhancements and retouching free of charge. That means I will remove acne and other blemishes. I also do selective color (b&w with some color), color tones, vignettes, etc. I like to play with the contrast level of b&w. There are so many shades of gray...

Do you have experience shooting in various lighting situations?
Yes. I started out as a studio photographer; however, I wanted to branch out. So I used what I already knew and applied it to outdoor and indoor shoots (combined with lots of reading, research, and practice). Both natural and artificial light are familiar to me.

Is your media preference film or digital?
I shoot with a Canon 50D SLR camera. What does this mean to you? It is a top of the line digital camera that produces high resolution images that are easy to enlarge when needed. It has 15.1 Megapixels, extremely advanced image stabilization (for shooting motion), and can vividly capture everything from traditional portraiture to speeding cars!

How many photographers do you work with?
It will be one photographer. If you have any concerns about that, please let us know, and we will bring a trusted assistant for the day of your wedding. There will be a fee for the extra person's time, as well as extra cost for their travel and lodging if it is needed.

Do you guarantee your presence at the actual event?
ABSOLUTELY!!!

Do you sometimes book yourself for more than one event in a day? Weekend?
Not at all. We block off two days for you that nobody else will get ~ the rehearsal dinner and the day of the ceremony itself. Our time is completely yours!

Do you have a replacement photographer in case you become unavailable on the day of the event?
I have developed a list of backup photographers in my area as well as in some other popular areas of the US. I am a tough cookie, though, and very committed to my work. I haven't needed it yet and hope to never need it. :)

What kind of equipment do you typically bring with you on the day-of?
I will bring my camera with a bag of different pieces of equipment I will need. Depending on the light of the location, I may also bring a reflector and some extra lighting equipment, but I tend to favor natural light. It is the most romantic. :)

Do you charge hourly or full day?
Your deposit covers us being present for your rehearsal dinner and the entire day of your wedding. I don't believe in charging by the hour ~ a wedding is a wedding, no matter how long.

What is your policy on taking breaks? If you require a meal break, do you require that the client provide your meal?
Only what is necessary... I do not smoke, and can wait until there is an appropriate time for anything else.

Do you charge for travel?
I will travel 20 miles from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, free of charge. Anywhere within 200 miles you will be charged for the cost of gas to drive and lodging if necessary. If you have a wedding located outside of driving range, you will be requested to purchase the plane ticket and lodging. Don't worry, though, coach is fine and we'll help you find the cheapest options available. Often times I will know people I can stay with in the area, so you may not always need to cover lodging if that is an option.

Do you retain the copyright for the photos?
As all photographers do, I own the copyright to the portraits. HOWEVER, I offer CDs with a copyright release form in my wedding packages so that you can do whatever you would like with your portraits.

Will images be available for viewing online?
Yes. We are set up with a password protected online gallery for the viewing needs of you and your family.

What kind of albums do you offer?
Custom lay flat or scrapbook style albums are included in different sizes in all of my collections. They start at 20 pages long, but you will not be charged for extra pages if they are needed. There are additional fees if you wish to substitute them for a flush mount album.

When will the client get the final album?
Creating the layout of each page takes time to do correctly, so we approximate that it will take 2-4 weeks for you to receive yours once we have had the initial discussion of your preferences.

Tips and Advice
1) YOUR WEDDING IS YOUR WEDDING:  It needs to be exactly the way you want it, and quite honestly, should not have to cost you an arm and a leg!  Don't be afraid to ask questions and do some price comparing.  Look around so that people don't take advantage of you.

2) PRICE SHOULD NOT BE THE FIRST THING YOU ASK ABOUT WHEN SEARCHING FOR QUALITY: Now obviously everybody is on a budget, and understandably so, so don't take this as a license to go crazy and broke.  However, when searching for the right vendors to fit your needs in any area of the planning, do the research and find out what you are getting first.  There's no point in knowing prices for somebody who is not a good match for you.  You don't buy toddler sized shoes for an adult just because they are cheaper, right?  No, you go the section with the right fit and style first, and look for you price range there.  Meet with these people!  You will learn the most through face to face interaction (and make sure it's with the actual person you will use on your big day, not a representative).  Ask a lot of questions and make sure you get the right answers.  When you find somebody you LIKE, then is the time to figure out the details, ESPECIALLY for the important pieces like the venue, officiant, coordinator (if you have one), and photographer.  Believe me on this one, if I thought making this entire section bold, capital letters, red, italic, and as big as the font goes would emphasize the importance of quality, I would do it. :)  If you do the research, you will find quality within your budget - I promise.

3) TELL YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER (AND ALL OTHER VENDORS FOR THAT MATTER) WHAT YOU WANT: A lot of photographers will give you descriptions of their style and how they like to do things, and some people end up with something they don't like in the end which is money down the drain.  If you like things posed, say so!  If you want things to be spontaneous, say the word!  This applies to all the other people you are relying on to make your wedding go smoothly, too.

4) EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED: The day someone doesn't have a story to tell about something that happened differently than planned at their wedding, I will stop dead in my tracks and hire them to plan my wedding.  If you stress yourself out over the details, you'll lose the real point of the wedding ~ the marriage.  You are about to spend the rest of your life with this person, so take a deep breath, cherish the moment, and don't worry about the rest.  People are there to help you!

5) INCLUDE EACH OTHER & PRIORITZE: I know, especially as a woman, that it is easy for us to become a little bit of a bridezilla.  Make sure that you include your future husband in the planning.  Sit down and decide together what parts are the most important to each of you, and build from there.  Also, get those important things out of the way first, so there is more of a guarantee that they will happen that way.  Book early and use more of your budget on these key pieces.  The rest will faill into place as time goes on, but if you wanted a specific location, waiting too long to book may cause you to miss out.

Did you know that the average couple in 2006 spent $26,400 each on 2.2million weddings? At least when it comes to your portraits, quality does NOT have to mean more zeros.  Let us know if we can help you!  Consultations are free and informative...
