FAQ Answers

Why should I shop on Diamonds on Fifth instead of other major online Retailers?
Our goal is to bring you the best prices on diamonds and jewelry, while at the same time maintaining the intimacy of a person jeweler. There are quite a few sites out there that just grab inventories of stones, many of them outdated, and list them, thus giving an illusion of having huge amounts of stones. We try to focus more on a good variety of desirable, well priced stones that we can look at and give you an opinion or send you a picture. We are located in the heart of the Diamond District which means that whatever your request is, the chances are that the answer you’ll receive is positive.

What happens when I place an order online?

Diamond Questions

What is the difference between certified and uncertified diamonds?
Certified diamonds have had their quality examined and confirmed by a major laboratory. You will receive the certificate from a reputable laboratory and have the confidence of knowing that the quality of the diamond is accurate to its representation. Uncertified diamonds have not been graded by a major lab, and therefore, do not offer the security and accuracy that its counterpart does. Certified diamonds are also significantly more valuable than comparable uncertified diamonds.

What does clarity enhanced mean?
Clarity enhanced means that the diamond has been altered to improve the clarity. It means that the stone has been fracture filled and sometimes laser drilled as well. These stones are significantly cheaper than others because of this characteristic and it is our policy not to sell diamonds of these unacceptable qualities.

What is the best way to care for and clean your diamond?
Only a diamond will scratch another diamond, for this reason, jewelry should not be stored together. Also avoid wearing your diamonds while doing any kind of rough work. If you notice a loose stone setting, we recommend you to stop wearing your jewelry and visit a jeweler immediately.
Dust, pollution and daily wear all conspire to prevent your diamond from looking its best. Professional cleaning is your best option but until then you can easily clean the jewelry yourself. Using any mild liquid detergent and a toothbrush, gently clean your diamond jewelry. Rinse under cold water and pat dry with a soft cloth. Learn More

What is Fluorescence?
Fluorescence as a term means that a diamond will glow in blue under a RV lamp. It was used originally in diamond certifications as additional information for identification.
The impact of blue fluorescence on price depends on its notice ability. For some higher color stones, fluorescence gives the stones a whiter, brighter appearance. Some buyers regularly pay better prices for highly fluorescent “I” color and lower stones. Yellow fluorescence may require an additional 5 to 10 percent discount. Generally, the higher the quality and price per carat the stronger fluorescence lowers value.

What is AGS “0” “1” “2”…”10” cut grades?
AGS “0 is the first and best Ideal Cut as defined for round diamonds by the American Gem Society. Using a scale of zero to ten, the worst is AGS “10”. We at Diamonds on Fifth regard AGS “0” “1” “2” as “ideal-Cuts”.

What is “clean to the naked eye”?
By definition diamonds with clarities of IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, are eye clean. SI3 is the border line and in some cases SI2 as well.

What is an “ideal Cut”?
An Ideal cut is a prices degree of proportions that profoundly influence the sparkle, fire and brilliance of a diamond. Ideal Cuts only apply to round brilliant cuts, since there is less agreement concerning the bet proportions necessary for optimum performance in fancy shapes.

What does Conflict Free Diamonds mean?
President Bush signed to law the Clean Diamond Trade Act requiring all US diamond retailers to purchase diamonds from manufacturers who have documentation warranting that the merchandise was obtained through legal channels. The US Customs Service is charged actively enforcing the provisions of the Kimberley Process as diamonds enter American ports.

Diamonds on Fifth is committed to offering its customers high quality graded diamonds, sourced from the world’s finest suppliers. We endorse any process that works to support and maintain legitimacy in the diamond trade.
