About
The creative force behind Portland, Oregon-based August Veils is Andrea Hoyt. Andrea has been in the bridal accessories business since 1996 when she opened her first store, AniA Bridal. As the business grew, Andrea found that many of her brides complained about a lack of quality bridal headpieces.

"I got started making tiaras by helping a customer who was in tears trying to find one," says Andrea. "It took me all week to make one tiara because I had never done it before. After that I vowed never to do it again. Now it's the main part of my business!"

Soon, she found a niche making custom headpieces for her customers and this grew into a full-time occupation. In 1999, Andrea sold her share of AniA Bridal to devote her time exclusively to custom bridal veils and headpieces - thus August Veils was born.

"I have always loved to work with my hands — drawing, sewing, etc," says Andrea. "In college, I took graphic arts courses and freelance drawing art classes. I've always had an aptitude for design."

In 2001, Andrea teamed up with a group of other local bridal vendors to form The Bridal Loft.

"Being part of the Loft has been crucial to the success in my business locally," commented Andrea. "The Loft has provided me a great working atmosphere I share with six other talented women. The combined positive attitude makes the Loft a comfortable place to be for customers. We are not a typical bridal shop — nor will we ever be."

Andrea's designs have been featured in Martha Stewart Weddings, Wedding Dresses Magazine, and on the cover of Portland Bride and Groom.

EJP Events loves working with August Veils. They apply the same attention to detail to their hand-made veils, tiaras, headpieces and hair jewelry that we apply to our wedding coordination. In addition, August Veils provides a fabulous "Ladies In Waiting" service that no bride who wants a stress-free dressing experience can do without. Absolutely 5 star service and more!
When I first started out in wedding photography, I accompanied my first bride to August Veils. She was treated like a princess. I could not believe the level of customer service they provided, not to mention how comfortable and fun it was! Andrea is a hoot, to say the least! I can't recommend them enough - and I do all the time!
August Veils is the top of the mark. They will bend over backwards to help their brides. I've seen them show up in the least likely places to make sure that their brides look their their very best on that all important day. If it's service you are looking for and quality not only in the products you buy, but the people you buy from, August Veils is the best.

Additional Questions and Answers

Why are your prices so high/low?

All products are made in the studio using local labor.  We try our hardest in keeping our prices competitive yet supporting our local economy.  By doing so , we can provide you with the best quality product.  Andrea our owner, personally inspects each piece before it is sent out.  She also cuts each veil out by herself to ensure consistency and to also be certain that her designs are properly represented.

Do you charge for consults?

There is never a charge for a consult.

How long does it take to receive my veil/headpiece once the order is placed?

Your order can take up to 4-6 weeks to complete.  However we are able to do quick turnarounds if need be.  Since all production is done with local talent, we can usually fill most orders in a minimum of a week’s notice.  Although we would prefer to not rush your order to allow for changes if you so choose.

I would like to use my mother's / grandmother's veil. What should I expect?

FIrst you will need to make an appointment.  Together we can discuss your ideas and I can make suggestions as to how to update the style.  At times I have held vintage veils and they have crumbled in my hands but we were able to save a few of the embellishments to be sewn onto another creation.  The possibilities are endless.  If the actuall design of the veil does not work with your gown, I have either incorporated some of the components of the into a headpiece/veil or used them on a ring pillow and garter.

Should I bring my dress to our appointment?

If your dress is available, yes. It helps you see the complete look.  But if it is not available, a picture of the dress with you wearing it or a photo online will suffice.

Will my veil and/or hair jewelry be done in time for my hair trial?

During our intitial appointment I will ask you if you need them.  If so, I will make sure you have your items in hand for your hair trial.  At times, there may be an issue on receiving components on time to complete your order. In this case I will allow you to borrow a sample to use.

What if I have religious parameters that I must adhere to?

Any and all concerns will be addressed during our first consult.  We take pride in making sure there that we have all the bases covered.

Tips and Advice
Tip #1

Bring your dress (if available) to your appointment.  Otherwise a photo of you in your dress or one off the internet will suffice.  We highly recommend that you bring the dress so you can see the complete look.

Tip #2

If you are unsure of the headpiece/veil style you like, come to the appointment after your hair trial.  If this is the case, please have your trial done a few months prior to your wedding to allow ample time for placing your order.

Tip #3

Bring a close friend or relative to your appointment.  The people you choose to help you make your decision should be someone that you value their honest opinion. Keep your entourage small.  As they say, "too many cooks in the kitchen cn spoil the whole dish..."
