HOW TO KNOW IF A PHOTOGRAPHER IS RIGHT FOR YOU:
You’re already familiar with the standard list of questions produced by bridal magazines and wedding websites that are supposed to help you determine which photographer is right for you- the only problem is the answers usually end up being the exact same with every photographer! So I’ve come up with some deeper questions to ask YOURSELF when looking at a photographer’s work to find out if a photographer is really right for YOU! The best part is - you can probably answer many of these questions on your own before ever meeting a photographer in person!!
- Ask to see an entire set of proofs from a wedding that will have similar lighting conditions to yours (indoors, outdoors, dark church, tent, etc.) Take notice of how the photographer handles different lighting conditions and if the images remain consistently beautiful throughout the changing lighting conditions of the wedding day. Do the images make you want to stop and look at each one, or just keep flipping through?
- When looking at an entire set of proofs, notice the balance of posed, detail, and candid images to see if they are capturing the kind of images that will help you remember your wedding the way you want to remember it. How do the people appear in the posed images? Is that how you want to appear in formals? Do you get a sense that they are relaxed and happy, or tense and uncomfortable? What does that say about the photographer who’s giving them direction?
- How do the images make you feel when you look at them? Do you feel like you were there? Can you feel the emotions and personalities of the people being photographed? This is a huge sign about how "in-tune" your photographer will be with what’s happening on your wedding day. Does it look like they’re just going with the motions and creating standard shots, or do they really care about what they’re photographing and creating unique images?
- Is the photographer’s personality one that makes you feel comfortable and relaxed? Are they excited about their work and working with you? The photographer will be with you every step of the wedding day, and if there’s anything about their personality, in writing, over the phone, or in person that makes you feel uneasy- that’s a good sign that you will feel tense around that person on the wedding day- and the last thing you need is extra stress on the wedding day!!
- Read the blog. If a photographer has a blog - check it out! It’s a good indicator of their latest work, their personality, and what they’re like!
