Here are some helpful tips & hints:

      Get at least 2 or 3 different estimates. Because choosing the right florist is choosing the one you get along with best and feel most comfortable with. You could use a florist that you either know or have been referred to by someone you trust or even your wedding planner.

      Bring pictures that you have out of magazines of styles, flowers, and ideas you like.

      Bring swatches of all the bridal party’s dresses. Also, bring a picture of your bridal gown. It will help with style of bouquets.

      Ask your florist if they have a portfolio of their work. Ask to see their portfolio of work they have done. If you like what you see go from there.

      Make sure they are available on your wedding date.

      Choose flowers that are in season in your area to keep the cost down. Importing flowers makes the cost go up.

      Make sure your estimate is in writing. Clarify when getting an estimate that all costs are stated (i.e. some florists may only quote flower costs than add on extras such as wire, ribbon, delivery, set up, and break down later on).

      If you are ready to choose a florist, get a contract that spells out everything.

      When you put down a deposit, make sure you get a written receipt.

      When choosing the color of the flowers in your bouquet, think about your complexion. For example, pale brides may need to add some brighter blooms to prevent them from looking washed out.

      If you are having black and white pictures done, make sure you pick floral with deep, 3D shape that stand out well.

      Choose flowers that work well with the tone of your wedding. For example, orchids are perfect as the main bloom for an Oriental or Tropical theme.

      Check with your ceremony and reception venues as to any decorating restrictions they may have.

      Chose your wedding date carefully. Florists are very busy around Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and Christmas. Your flowers may also cost more at these.

      If possible take your floral designer/consultant to view your ceremony and reception venues, so that they can design appropriate to the setting.
